Lady Pamela Hicks was laid to rest today following her sad death earlier this month at the age of 97. A first cousin to Prince Philip and a former lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth II, Lady Pamela’s funeral was held at Brightwell Baldwin Church in Oxfordshire after her passing earlier this month on June 5.
As her wicker coffin, topped with a delicate arrangement of flowers, was carried into the Church, Lady Pamela’s youngest daughter, India Hicks, watched on tearfully.
Lady Pamela Carmen Louise Hicks was the youngest daughter of Edwina Ashley and Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was Prince Philip’s uncle. Her father was tragically killed by an IRA bomb on his fishing boat off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland, in 1979. As well as being a cousin of Prince Philip, Lady Pamela was and a great-niece of the last Empress of Russia, Alexandra Feodorovna.

In an Instagram post announcing her mother’s death on June 5, Lady Pamela’s daughter, India, wrote: “My mother died peacefully today. Whilst there is no tragedy in the death of a 97-year-old who has lived a full life, I know grief will be unavoidable, lurking around waiting for me, but today I am simply grateful that she was my Mother. And through the prism of a crowded and remarkable past, she made incomparable company, carrying her memories lightly, and always with humour.
“My mother maintained right up to the end, the impeccable style, sharp mind, and effortless charm that made her not only a cherished institution, but truly the last of her kind.”
Lady Pamela was born in Barcelona and later joined her elder sister, Lady Patricia Mountbatten at school in New York.
Thanks to her family’s close ties to the Royal Family, she was chosen as a bridesmaid at Princess Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.
Lady Pamela became a lady-in-waiting to the Princess before and after she acceded to the throne. She was with the new Queen at some key moments in her life, including when her father, King George VI, passed away while she was on tour in Kenya.
She was also asked to accompany the Queen and Prince Philip on their six-month tour of the Commonwealth between 1953 and 1954. During that time, they visited the likes of Jamaica, Panama, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Libya, Malta and Gibraltar.
Lady Pamela married David Nightingale Hicks on January 13, 1960, in Hampshire and had Princess Anne as one of her bridesmaids. The couple soon welcomed two daughters, Edwina and India, and a son, Ashley. David sadly passed away in March 1998 at the age of 69 from lung cancer.
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, Lady Pamela became the oldest living descendant of Queen Victoria.
