Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has tripled its budget by passing a major global milestone. The new Tim Burton movie is a legacy sequel to his original 1988 horror-comedy featuring the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz alongside a new ensemble cast that includes Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Arthur Conti. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice box office made a splash when it opened to $111 million, a total that already exceeded the worldwide gross of the entire run of the original movie.

Per Warner Bros. Pictures, as of Sunday morning, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is projected to close its third weekend in theaters by bringing its global box office total to a cumulative gross of $329.7 million. In addition to allowing the movie to cross the $100 million milestone internationally with an overseas total of $103 million, this pushes it past the $300 million global milestone, which means it has more than tripled its reported budget of roughly $100 million. It is only the twelfth 2024 release to pass this milestone, with the most recent being Alien: Romulus.
What This Box Office Milestone Means For Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
The Movie Is Probably In The Black

Because this total has tripled the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice budget, the movie is most likely already turning a profit. Because of multiple factors including publicity costs and theaters keeping half of ticket sales, a movie typically needs to earn between two and two-and-a-half times its production budget in order to make its money back. This would most likely place the movie’s break-even point somewhere around $250 million, a milestone that it has already exceeded by nearly $100 million.
The new movie cost considerably more than the original Beetlejuice , which had a $15 million price tag, a budget that comes to about $42 million when adjusted for inflation.
While the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice release has not yet become one of the Top 10 releases of 2024, it seems highly likely to break onto the chart before the end of its run. Whether it stays in the Top 10 by the end of the year remains to be seen, however, as it will face fierce competition as October and the holiday season bring in major franchise properties including Joker: Folie à Deux, Venom: The Last Dance, Moana 2, Wicked, Gladiator II, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

More Burton Projects Are Likely To Be On Their Way

It seems likely that the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will result in even more projects in the same realm coming to the screen, chasing the same core audience that have connected so strongly with the new project. Whether this is a third Beetlejuice movie remains to be seen, as the director has made comments that suggest this is not a certainty. However, more collaborations between Burton and star Jenna Ortega outside of their hit Netflix series Wednesday seem highly probable.
