Body found after Brit, 23, went missing swimming in European holiday hotspot

A body believed to be that of a British man, 23, who went missing while swimming in the sea off Albufeira, Portugal, has been recovered by authorities.

Interrupted search for missing young man on Peneco beach in AlbufeiraThe search for the young man, 23 years old and British nationality, who went missing at sea this afternoon, June 11, on Peneco beach, Albufeira council, was interrupted early tonight without the victim having been found.In the search operations, coordinated by the Port Captain and Local Commander of the Portimão Maritime Police, were engaged, by sea, crews from the Ferragudo Life Saving Station and elements from the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, with a team of divers. Next to the coast, elements of the Portimão Maritime Police Local Command, the “SeaWatch” Project, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Albufeira, supported by drones, and still the lifeguards on duty on the beach were carrying out searches.Search operations were disrupted earlier tonight and will resume tomorrow morning.According to what was possible, the victim was accompanied by another young man, 19 years old and British nationality, who must have left the water by his own means to ask for help, having eventually disappeared.The British Embassy in Portugal, through the Consulate in Portimão, was activated to contact the victim’s relatives and provide psychological support to the 19-year-old young man.

A body has been discovered following a search operation launched for a British man, aged 23, who went missing in a popular holiday destination.

The man disappeared while swimming in the sea in Portugal last week, according to local authorities.

Portugal’s National Maritime Authority confirmed the 23 year old vanished on Thursday while swimming with a 19 year old man, also from the UK, at Peneco Beach in Albufeira, on Portugal’s southern coastline.

Portuguese police revealed that a body, believed to be that of the missing man, was retrieved on Tuesday afternoon off the Albufeira coast.

“Following an alert at 6.37 pm from a fisherman in the vicinity, officers from the Portimao Local Maritime Police Command, the Albufeira Volunteer Firefighters’ Humanitarian Association and the Albufeira Municipal Civil Protection Service were mobilised,” Portuguese police said in a statement.

“On arrival at the scene, members of the Maritime Police, in collaboration with the Fire Brigade, transported the victim to Albufeira Marina.”

A local Maritime Police official said: “Death was confirmed at the scene and, following contact with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the body was transported by the Fire Brigade to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of the Western Algarve.

“The British Consulate in Portimao was contacted and informed of the incident.

“The Maritime Police’s Portimao Local Command took charge of the incident.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been contacted for comment.

According to the National Maritime Authority, a search operation was launched following the man’s disappearance last Friday.

The 19 year old British national who was with the 23 year old “apparently managed to get out of the water by his own means to seek help after which the other one disappeared”.
