On July 3, Portuguese forward Diogo Jota tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain, sending shockwaves through the football world. His sudden departure has left deep sorrow across the global sports community. Despite the heartfelt tribute, Cristiano Ronaldo was noticeably absent from Jota’s funeral ceremony. Although he reportedly visited to pay his respects the day before, he did not attend the official farewell service.

Several of Jota’s teammates and colleagues, including Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Virgil van Dijk, and others, were present at the funeral. Notably, close friends João Cancelo and Rúben Neves flew urgently from the United States—just after completing a FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal with Al Hilal—to return to Portugal and say their final goodbyes.

According to a report from the Mirror, Cristiano Ronaldo had carefully weighed his decision. Sources suggest that his attendance might have drawn overwhelming attention, potentially disrupting the solemnity of the ceremony. The concern was that his presence could cause a media frenzy, overshadowing the purpose of the service: to quietly honor and mourn a lost friend and teammate.

Portuguese journalist Antonio Ribeiro Cristóvão commented on the absence, saying:

“He is the captain of the Portuguese national team. Many expected Cristiano Ronaldo to be present at Diogo Jota’s funeral.
If he chose not to attend, there must be a reason. He has a responsibility toward events like this—as the leader of the national team.”

Nonetheless, Ronaldo’s absence has sparked debate and emotional responses from fans, many of whom are now awaiting a direct explanation from the football icon himself.
