Authorities in southern France are investigating after two young children were found unresponsive inside a vehicle during extreme heat conditions.
The victims, aged two and four, were discovered Monday afternoon in a car parked inside the garage of their grandmother’s home in Carpentras, Provence. Despite emergency efforts, both children could not be saved.

According to reports, the children’s 33-year-old mother did not realize they were inside the car until she found them and called emergency services.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that the mother allegedly told authorities she had forgotten the children while shopping. Investigators have not yet questioned her.
Officials have not determined how long the children remained inside the vehicle.
