As their bitter rift deepens, Harry isn’t holding back on what he really thinks lay ahead for his brother

His trip to the UK is just mere weeks away now, yet it still remains unclear whether Prince Harry’s homecoming will see the estranged royal reunite with any members of his family.

While King Charles is widely reported to have mellowed over the past few months, having met with his youngest son in September, the bitter rift between Harry, 41, and his brother Prince William, 43, has shown no signs of healing.

In fact, we’re told that amidst growing speculation that William is preparing himself to take the throne, Harry’s bad blood towards his brother is only getting worse as a source claims Harry has sensationally delivered a series of damning statements about his brother behind-closed-doors, including questions over his suitability as the future King.

An insider says, ‘Harry is very snarky about William, he thinks he’s drooling over the power and going to be a total nightmare once he gets it. He says people don’t know the real William the way he does and once they see the truth they’ll be shocked.

‘He is not shy about saying that William doesn’t have the temperament to be King. He says he’s too vindictive and cruel to be a good ruler, not to mention incredibly stubborn and hot headed.

‘Everyone knows William likes being in charge but struggles when things don’t go his way, he’s been that way since they were kids, very touchy and quick to explode, according to Harry.’

Meanwhile, reports emerged in April alleging that Charles had overridden William’s advice for the monarch not to travel to the US to meet President Donald Trump, on the grounds that he reportedly had wanted his father to prioritise his health.

The move was just the latest in what has been widely viewed as a new tussle for power between the King and his Heir Apparent, who royal watchers claim has been increasingly behind decisions made on behalf of the Firm – potentially many years before he takes the throne.

Coincidentally, just weeks after his meeting with Harry at Clarence House in London in September, Charles joined William at Balmoral Castle in Scotland – a tradition they have undertaken for the past three years.

However, an insider previously told us that this trip in particular spelled a series of ‘crisis talks’ between Charles and William, as they revealed how the monarch had been forced to clear the air with his eldest son after a period of tension between them.

The insider said, ‘Getting William out to Balmoral for this father-son summit was a chance for them to have the peace and privacy they needed to really hash things out and quell the noise that’s been building about their own issues.

‘This meeting was also aimed at reminding William that he’s still not at the helm. Charles appreciates all the ways he’s been helping, but he’s not ready to hand over the reins just yet and he’s losing patience with how hard William’s been pushing.’

Now, we’re told that Harry believes their father is deliberately pulling William in over his fears that his eldest son is not prepared for such a position; one that the King himself only took over at the age of 73 – thirty years older than William is now.

The insider says, ‘He’s convinced Charles knows William is ready for any sort of real power and that’s why he’s continuing to work himself non-stop in the middle of battling cancer.

‘Harry is predicting that once William is handed the keys to the Kingdom it will be an epic disaster, he doesn’t come out and say he’s rooting for him to fail, but it does seem that way.’

Alongside Charles, Harry and William’s late mother, Princess Diana, would undoubtedly have been heartbroken at the state of what had once appeared to be an extremely close bond between her sons.

Having been an incredibly protective and doting mother to both boys, Diana’s former butler and close friend Paul Burrell previously said the Princess would have been ‘devastated’ by their rift.

He added, ‘If their mother was here today, she would bring them back together…It was very important to her that they stayed close. [Princess Diana’s] vision was that the two of them would be inseparable, they would grow together and be two princes, one would be king one day but the prince supporting the king.’

However, Paul also noted that Harry had been privy to all of the interactions between William and palace staff growing up, explaining, ‘Harry understood his brother would one day be King because Harry listened to people whispering in William’s ear all his childhood years, ‘One day, you’re going to be king. You have to sit up straight because you’re going to be king. You have to know how to eat properly with a knife and fork because you’re going to be king’.

‘All these lessons were being given to William in the nursery with Harry watching. So, how do you think Harry felt as a child growing up?’

For years, the siblings had put on a united front in public, with their formative years before Diana’s tragic death being painted as an idyllic childhood spent between Kensington Palace, Balmoral and the Sandringham Estates.

Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare, however, revealed a completely different reality for Harry who, after describing William as his ‘beloved brother’ and ‘arch nemesis’, further wrote, ‘There has always been this competition between us, weirdly.’

He added, ‘I think it really plays into, or was played by the ‘heir/spare’ [narrative].’

He also explosively alleged that William had physically assaulted him, pushing him onto the floor in an altercation over Meghan in 2019.

Meanwhile, the source says that for those who have witnessed the sibling relationship between Harry and William growing up, it had been clear that Harry had been ‘jealous’ of his older brother – something Harry himself has denied; having explained that he had been allowed more freedom of choice as the ‘spare’.

‘It’s common knowledge at the palace, and certainly in William’s world, that Harry is a jealous character who has got an enormous amount of envy towards his brother,’ the source says.

‘His whole book [Spare] just reeked of pure, unadulterated jealousy, and that was for public consumption, so you can just imagine how bad he is in private. Harry has had an axe to grind with William for years. To this day he will bring up things that happened when they were schoolboys to prove what an ogre his brother is.

‘William didn’t ask to be born first, but that was his destiny and he has a role that he takes very seriously. But what really drives him [Harry] mad is how much respect William gets as this great statesman when, in Harry’s eyes at least, he is nothing but a buffoon half the time.’

And the source says the latest reports of William allegedly enjoying a pint with friends while adopting a ‘disguise’ has only further irked Harry – whose own behaviour, including the time he, at 27-years-old, played strip poker in Las Vegas – has hit headlines globally.

The source says, ‘The guy is middle aged and he’s dressing up in disguises to sneak off with his friends for drinks. Harry says this kind of laddish behavior is the norm for his brother and yet he somehow always gets away with it.

‘In Harry’s view the only reason people are still being taken in by William’s image is because Kate makes him look good. He says Kate is the real star of the operation and always has been.

‘He’s been complaining about the double standard for years, way before he wrote Spare and laid it all out there, and obviously that doesn’t do a lot for his relationship with William.’

However, we’re told this alleged resentment has only furthered the divide between the two brothers, as the source says William, who is already said to be ‘furious’ over his brother’s tell-alls, fears Harry could cause further ‘trouble’ in the future – something he’ll want to avoid at all costs when he does become King.

The insider explains, ‘For his little brother to be knocking him down and making these snipes is pretty infuriating. A lot of people say it’s one of the reasons William is so down on Harry, he doesn’t trust him not to speak badly about him when his back is turned.

‘In his view his loose lips only prove what bitter troublemaker he really is. William has a lot of confidence in his ability to lead the country when the time comes, he’s been preparing his entire life so Harry’s criticism isn’t shaking him, he has no worries about what he will be like as a King.’
