ABC World News Tonight viewers were left close to tears after a “terrible” news announcement.
The show’s usual host, David Muir, was absent on Friday, December 12, after he stepped away for his routine weekend break. However, fans were still kept up to date as fellow ABC News host Whit Johnson stood in for the regular presenter.
At one point, Johnson halted the show to explain to viewers that a woman had been stabbed in the back while changing her baby at a shopping centre. The baby was uninjured in the attack, and the mother is now in a stable condition. Johnson announced to viewers, “A mother stabbed in the back while changing her baby at a Macy’s in midtown Manhattan in a seemingly unprovoked attack, according to authorities.”
“Police say the woman, a tourist from California, was attacked by another woman inside a restroom on Thursday. “The woman’s husband reportedly disarmed the suspect and held her down until police arrived.
“The mother is in stable condition, and her baby girl was unharmed. The suspect, Kerri Aherne, is now charged with attempted murder.”
The clip was shared to ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram page, with the caption, “While changing her baby’s diaper in a bathroom at Macy’s Herald Square, a mother was stabbed in the back in a seemingly unprovoked attack, authorities say. The mother is in stable condition, and her baby girl was unharmed. @WhitJohnsonTV reports.”
Viewers shared their distress over the news, with one posting to Instagram, “Unbelievable. I think the woman who stabbed her was out to get her baby. So sick!! God Bless that family!!” Another added: “What is going on here in NYC so sad.”
“It’s NOT safe ANYWHERE these days, “someone else added. “Pure evil is lurking to attack you when you least expect it!!” A fourth commenter said, “Terrible. So many violences and tragic happen almost everyday.”
