Some shows you watch once and move on. Others burrow so deep under your skin that when the final episode ends, you scroll straight back to episode one and start all over again.

This Netflix drama has firmly planted itself in the second category, with fans declaring it the best series they’ve ever seen and returning to it again and again.

Hooked from the very first episode

The reactions pouring in from viewers paint a picture of a show that grabs you instantly and simply refuses to let go.

“The best show in the last years: action, realism, drama, trust and betrayal, love and slow burn… it has everything one needs to stay glued,” one fan raved. “The performance of the main cast is superb!” It’s the kind of breathless endorsement that makes it very difficult to scroll past.

Another viewer was equally emphatic: “One of the best series I have ever seen. Very powerful show. I loved it. The acting was excellent. I recommend this series to everyone.”

A third described the creeping, irresistible pull that so many fans seem to experience: “My friend suggested this show and I believe it’s worth it. After I started to watch it, I got more and more curious to know what’s next. It’s addictive.”

Perhaps the most telling reaction of all came from a viewer who simply said: “Rewatching because it was just that good.”

In an era of infinite streaming content, choosing to spend your precious screen time revisiting something you’ve already seen is about as high a compliment as you can pay.

A story rooted in real life

The show’s premise is as compelling as the fan reactions suggest. The drama follows Teresa, a woman who flees Mexico after her drug-runner boyfriend is murdered.

Settling in Dallas, she sets her sights on becoming the country’s most powerful drug smuggler while hunting for the person responsible for her lover’s death. It’s a story of survival, transformation, ambition, and vengeance, and it doesn’t pull its punches.

What gives the narrative an extra layer of intrigue is its real-world roots. The series is based on the Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, which itself draws from a novel by celebrated Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

That novel, in turn, was inspired by a real-life figure: Marllory Chacón, a female drug lord whose nickname, bestowed by the Guatemalan press, ultimately lent the show its title.

Chacón surrendered to authorities in 2014. The fact that a story this dramatic is grounded in reality only makes it hit harder.

The creative force behind the camera

The US drama series was created by Joshua John Miller and his writing partner M.A. Fortin, who together crafted a show that balances high-octane thriller energy with genuine emotional complexity. T

heir ability to sustain tension and character development across five seasons is a significant part of what keeps fans coming back.

The show premiered its first season back in 2016, but new viewers are still discovering it today and diving headfirst into all five seasons, a testament to how well it holds up and how effectively word of mouth continues to spread.

A lead performance that demands attention

At the centre of it all is Brazilian actress Alice Braga, best known for her roles in Dark Matter and I Am Legend, who delivers a career-defining performance as Teresa.

She’s flanked by Peter Gadiot and Veronica Falcón, both of whom bring tremendous depth to their roles, but it’s Braga who anchors every scene with a quiet, steely intensity that makes Teresa’s transformation utterly believable.

Braga has spoken openly about why representation in front of and behind the camera matters so deeply to her.

Speaking with Forbes, she reflected on the significance of having Latinos visible on screen: “When they’re watching the show, they can see themselves in it.”

She went further, emphasising that true representation requires inclusion at every level of production, in the writer’s room, in the director’s chair, and in executive decision-making. It’s a perspective that shaped the show’s authenticity and is a large part of why it resonates so powerfully with its audience.

Five seasons, one heartbreaking ending

Despite its devoted fanbase, the show came to a close after its fifth season, not due to falling ratings or dwindling interest, but as a result of the USA Network’s broader decision to step back from original programming. It’s a cancellation that still stings for fans who had hoped to follow Teresa’s story even further.

The good news is that what exists is more than worth your time. Five rich, propulsive seasons of television await anyone yet to discover it.
