Luka Dončić Influences Lakers’ Roster Moves — And LeBron James Is Paying Attention!

But James said he was caught off guard by the Lakers’ trade for Luka Doncic and now, it’s being reported that Los Angeles’ subsequent moves after acquiring the guard were made to appease its newest star, not the resident one.

The Lakers agreed to a deal to acquire Hornets big man Mark Williams — an effort to get Doncic a lob threat and bolster the front court after sending away Anthony Davis to the Mavericks in the trade for the All-NBA guard.

According to ESPN, Williams was a handpicked trade option by Doncic, and general manager Rob Pelinka made the move happen and was willing to sacrifice 2024 first round draft pick Dalton Knecht and a future first-round pick.

The trade was ultimately rescinded because of Williams’ failed physical. However it showed Pelinka’s commitment to pleasing Doncic with the fact that the organization was willing to acquire the young center at a steep price tag.

Pelinka made the trade to establish goodwill with Doncic — who is a free agent after next season — and improve the current roster, according to ESPN.

It was something LeBron James’ camp took notice of, the outlet reported, as the Lakers are already trying to build to around the 25-year-old Doncic.

“This enthusiasm and eagerness to make Doncic happy hasn’t always been seen in instances with James. What is clear is that Doncic will have a say. And it wasn’t lost on James’ camp,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin wrote. “Pelinka prioritized Doncic’s involvement upon his arrival and immediately engaged in the Williams trade that he’d asked for, when James had for years wanted the team to trade its picks to improve its roster.”

Doncic is expected to make his Lakers debut in Monday night’s clash with the Jazz.

Los Angeles is 31-19 and in fifth place in the Western Conference — just three games back of the No. 2 Grizzlies.
