The Dallas Mavericks suffered a tough loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, and it was evident just how much injuries are affecting them in high-stakes NBA matchups. The absence of their newest addition, Anthony Davis, was particularly glaring in the paint, as they had no answer for a dominant Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Davis, who has been sidelined with a left adductor strain since his Mavericks debut on February 8 against the Houston Rockets, provided an update on his recovery during an interview with basketball reporter Dorothy Gentry on Sunday. The star big man reassured Mavericks fans with an optimistic outlook.
“Working every single day. As soon as I get back on the floor, I’m going to bring that same energy I brought in the first game that I played,” Davis said, emphasizing his commitment to returning at full strength.
Before his injury, Davis made an immediate impact for Dallas, delivering 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks in his lone appearance. His presence in the paint was exactly what the Mavericks needed to bolster their interior defense, and his absence has been deeply felt.

Dallas’ defensive struggles continue
Since losing Davis, the Mavericks have posted a 4-4 record, reflecting their inconsistency as they try to adjust without a dominant rim protector. While their offense remains potent with Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson leading the charge, Dallas has struggled to contain elite big men and protect the paint. PJ Washington’s return will help, but the team’s defensive identity has taken a hit without Davis anchoring the middle.
At 32-29, Dallas currently sits 10th in the Western Conference standings, tied with the Sacramento Kings and just 0.5 games behind the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors. With the playoff race tightening, every game matters, and the Mavericks must find ways to stay afloat until Davis is back in the lineup.
Playoff push: can the Mavericks hold on?
While Dallas remains in contention, their path to the postseason won’t be easy. Defensive adjustments will be crucial, whether through improved team defense, rebounding efforts, or potential lineup changes. Davis’ return will be a game-changer, but until then, the Mavericks must find ways to survive in an ultra-competitive NBA Western Conference.
