Mark Zuckerberg, the fourth-richest man in the world with a net worth of $198 billion, has made headlines again—not for his wealth, but for his generosity. The Meta CEO and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have donated $1.5 million toward building Kauai’s first public charter school, set to open near their $270 million Hawaiian estate. This lavish property, known as Koolau Ranch, spans 1,300 acres and includes two mansions with 30 bedrooms, 11 treehouses, and an underground tunnel network.

Zuckerberg’s Pledge to Kauai
Since acquiring his vast beachfront property on Kauai, Zuckerberg has faced backlash, with critics accusing him of “colonizing” the island. In response, he promised to work closely with the local community, a commitment he has upheld through initiatives like the Chan Zuckerberg Kaua‘i Community Fund, part of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. One result of this pledge is the Namahana School, which will soon serve the North Shore of Kaua‘i.
The Namahana School: A Lifeline for Local Students
The Namahana School, named after the nearby Namahana Mountain, will occupy 11 acres in Kilauea and is expected to open by the end of next year. This tuition-free charter school will serve middle and high school students, offering a solution to the grueling three-hour daily commutes many currently endure. Local residents have described the challenges children face, including waiting in the dark for buses and navigating treacherous roads prone to closures.

The $1.5 million donation includes a $750,000 cash gift and state-of-the-art mobile facilities valued at $800,000. This contribution is part of the school’s $10 million capital campaign, which has already raised $6 million in pre-opening funds.
A School Rooted in Hawaiian Culture and Tradition
Namahana School will embrace ina-based learning, an approach inspired by Native Hawaiian traditions, and focus on project-based education. Student enrollment begins in January, starting with 120 middle school students. Over the next five years, the school will expand by adding one grade annually, fulfilling a decade-long dream for the community.
The school will initially open in a temporary facility, located just a mile from Zuckerberg’s estate, raising curiosity about whether his three daughters will attend.
Beyond Education: Supporting Kaua‘i’s Affordable Housing
In addition to the $1.5 million school donation, Zuckerberg has contributed $626,000 to support affordable housing initiatives on Kaua‘i, addressing another critical community need.
Balancing Luxury with Responsibility
While Zuckerberg invests an astounding $270 million into his sprawling property—complete with mansions, a village, and a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker—his donations demonstrate a commitment to the local community. Despite facing criticism for his opulence, his actions in Kaua‘i suggest an effort to balance privilege with responsibility.

A Step Toward Community Connection
Mark Zuckerberg’s $1.5 million donation to Kauai’s first public school is more than a gesture of goodwill—it’s a promise to uplift a community he now calls home. As the Namahana School prepares to welcome its first students, it marks a significant milestone for the North Shore of Kaua‘i. Whether this initiative will mend the tension between Zuckerberg and local residents remains to be seen, but it’s a step in the right direction for a billionaire looking to make a meaningful impact.
