In the mid-1970s, Tony Blackburn was riding high as Radio 1’s golden boy, married to TV star Tessa Wyatt and living the dream in leafy Berkshire. Next door were another young actress and her husband — a successful musician and songwriter — and the two glamorous couples quickly became inseparable.

They lounged by their neighbouring swimming pools, played croquet on the lawns and fussed over their many pets, including three donkeys. But behind the picture-perfect façade, an extraordinary four-way drama was unfolding.

It has now emerged that the couples had become entangled in what Blackburn would later describe as a ‘love square’ — with him having an affair with Margot Webb while claiming her husband Roger was sleeping with Tessa.

Today, The Mail on Sunday can reveal the fullest account yet — speaking exclusively to Margot, the so-called “other woman” in Blackburn’s marriage.

And while she admits the affair, she is furious about his endless bragging — insisting he was, in her words, “the worst lover I ever had.”

The scandal erupted last week after Blackburn’s indiscreet appearance on broadcaster Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, where he casually claimed his then wife Tessa had no idea he was cheating on her with the neighbour — before adding that she was also supposedly having an affair with Margot’s husband.

Blackburn, now 82, who has often boasted about sleeping with more than 500 women, even compared the situation to a ‘Home Counties version of Celebrity Wife Swap’.

But Tessa, now 77, quickly shut down the story, saying: “That’s not true. I’ve never had any affairs.”

Now Margot, 77 — the only surviving member of the alleged love square after Roger died in 2002 — has had enough.

“I haven’t had that many lovers,” she said, “but Tony was the worst one I ever had. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. He didn’t have a clue.”

She described being a shy, naïve convent girl who initially felt flattered by Blackburn’s attention — but admitted: “Sleeping with him was always the part of our date I looked forward to least.”

Margot and Roger had moved into a seven-bedroom house in Cookham Dean in the early 1970s, just as Blackburn and Tessa bought their ivy-clad country retreat, Hollycroft.

Roger’s career was booming — composing music for film and television, including George and Mildred and The Gentle Touch, while also working with stars such as Shirley Bassey and Johnny Mathis.

Margot, meanwhile, was acting and raising their daughter Julia.

Blackburn later wrote in his autobiography about raucous nude pool parties and steamy nights — but Margot says it is all nonsense.Margot, a former actress, who told The Mail on Sunday that she was fed up with Tony Blackburn's 'endless bragging' about their short-lived relationship

“We played croquet, the kids splashed in the pool and the donkeys wandered around,” she said. “Everyone was wearing their swimming costumes. He just invented the rest to make it sound juicy.”

Their affair began when Blackburn asked Roger if he could take Margot to the cinema. She insists neither she nor her husband suspected anything improper.

“It didn’t dawn on me he had other intentions,” she said. “Tessa was often away and Roger worked all the time. It only lasted six to nine months — and Tessa and Roger were definitely not seeing each other.”

Despite this, Blackburn even dedicated Billy Paul’s Me And Mrs Jones — a song about an affair — to Margot live on air.

She remembers him as vain and insecure, spending an hour in front of the mirror each morning, even putting mascara on his bald patch.

“He wouldn’t go out in the rain,” she added. “Tony can be pleasant, but his insecurities make him a nightmare.”

Although she briefly left Roger during the turmoil, the couple reconciled and stayed together until his sudden death from a brain tumour in 2002. Tragically, their daughter Julia was killed in a car crash in California in 2005 aged just 34.

Margot says Blackburn’s revelations reopened deep wounds.

“All I have left of my husband are memories,” she said. “I don’t want them tarnished by the nonsense in his book.”

The affair ultimately marked the beginning of the end for Blackburn’s five-year marriage to Tessa, who later found love with actor Richard O’Sullivan. They divorced in 1977.

And now, after decades of silence, Margot says she simply wants the truth known.

“I’m not looking for sympathy,” she said. “I just want to set the record straight.”
