A dingo that was reportedly stabbed in the neck after it bit a nine-year-old’s arm on K’gari has been euthanised by wildlife rangers.
On Friday, at about 11.47am, Queensland Ambulance confirmed that a nine-year-old boy had been bitten on the arm by a dingo at Yidney Rocks on K’gari.
Per ABC News, “multiple witnesses” told rangers that a bystander quickly helped the child, with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Mark Cody telling the publication that a man reportedly used a pocketknife to stab the dingo in the neck to help the child.
“The animal was observed originally when we arrived at the scene. While it appeared quite lifeless, its eyes were open,” Cody said.
“Whilst [rangers] were trying to manage the people on the beach, and while other staff were bringing the appropriate medication to provide humane relief to the animal, the animal has moved further into the bush.”
The following day, a spokesperson for the Department of Environment confirmed that the dingo had been found and was “humanely euthanised” by rangers.

The bystander who reportedly stabbed the dingo — which was said to be a 10-month-old female pup — won’t be penalised, 9News reports.
Speaking to ABC News, Butchulla leader Darren Blake — who previously worked as a dingo ranger on K’gari — noted that these incidents can be prevented, and urged visitors to stay alert.
“It’s not good news on both ends. My heart goes out to the little boy, he didn’t need to experience that,” Blake shared.
“The wongari [dingo] has paid the ultimate price.
“Being a parent and going over there, you can’t relax, you can never relax.”
Blake advises that visitors should use a stick to scare dingoes away, noting that they’re “not starving” but are “hunters and scavengers”.
“Everyone needs to do the right thing and deter the animal. Don’t let it hang around you,” Blake added.
Friday’s incident is the 13th high-risk dingo encounter this year.
