In my years covering MAFS, this year’s Retreat Week was the most catastrophic yet.
Friendships fractured, a throwaway joke snowballed into a crisis. It wasn’t about romance – it was about producers in damage control.

Danny sums it up bluntly.
‘The retreat is definitely… it’s a shootout. It’s a full-blown shootout, like a Western,’ he told me this week.
Scott doesn’t even pretend it resembled a couples’ getaway.

‘It wasn’t really a retreat,’ he says. ‘There were inappropriate comments, people walking away early. It just escalated.’
So, on to the ‘finger bang’ joke that caused all the trouble.
She joked that while one couple had been to hell and back – a clear reference to Joel and Juliette – another couple had ‘had a finger bang’ – a nod to Rachel and Steven’s growing closeness that really should have stayed private.
Soon Rachel was in tears. In her view, the intimacy between her and Steven, who were trying to take things slowly, had been made a public joke.
‘No one was backing down’
The next day, Rachel was still fuming. Then Bec got angry, unable to understand why Rachel couldn’t just accept there was no malice behind the gag.
‘Bec wasn’t backing down. Rachel wasn’t backing down. It just kept escalating,’ an insider reveals.
Danny sums it up bluntly: ‘The retreat is definitely… it’s a shootout. It’s a full-blown shootout’

So, what was the ‘finger bang’ joke that caused all the trouble? An earlier tongue-in-cheek reference to Steven and Rachel’s intimacy during a pizza night resurfaced at the retreat when Bec (pictured) was asked by producers to give a speech on the first night. She went too far
Producers were eventually forced to intervene.
‘A senior producer stepped in and basically said, “Enough. It’s been three days. Drop it.” It had completely taken over the retreat’.
The 30-second chat that became a betrayal
In an attempt to de-escalate things, Rachel’s husband Steven had a brief off-camera chat with Bec before filming resumed.
‘It was literally 30 seconds,’ a source explains. ‘She said there was no malicious intent. He said he understood, that it was disrespectful, but let’s move on.’
‘When Rachel found out [about the chat with Bec], she felt betrayed. In her mind, he wasn’t standing firmly by her,’ adds my spy.
Insiders say what Steven saw as conflict resolution actually made things worse.
‘He’s not a grudge-holder. He just wanted it over. But that small moment turned into something much bigger,’ says a source.

Bourbon, boys’ night and a fractured group
As tensions simmered, the retreat descended further into chaos.
‘There was a boys’ night that got interrupted. It started raining. Steven literally walked off with a bottle of bourbon,’ a source laughs. ‘It was that kind of energy.’
By the final night, the group was divided.
‘There was this shift in the room. Danny looked shell-shocked, alliances were shaky, and then Juliette allegedly called Bec a “dumb c***” or a “freak”, and it just exploded again.’
Bec vs Gia: No coming back
Bec and Gia’s continuing rivalry has been simmering since day one, but the retreat turned it into a full-blown blaze.
Gia claims Bec was ‘lying’ and ‘coming undone’. Bec’s husband Danny insists the opposite.
‘She gets a kick out of going around and lying about people,’ he says of Gia.
The feud stopped being about the ‘finger bang’ comment and started to become about Bec in general.
Gia describes it as ‘basically us against Bec at that point’.
New alliances formed quickly, with Gia growing closer to intruder bride Juliette.
Scott vs Danny: Collateral damage

Scott and Danny had what Danny calls an ‘instant connection’ at the bucks party, but not even their friendship could survive the retreat.
‘It definitely takes a toll on mine and Scott’s relationship,’ Danny admits.
‘It was collateral damage. It was all because of the Bec and Gia rivalry.’
Scott doesn’t deny the tension either: ‘We have to back our wives. That’s just part of being a good partner.’
Danny adds: ‘How are we both meant to back our wives without getting each other?’
By the second night, insiders say the frostiness between the men was obvious.
‘You could feel it,’ one bride says. ‘It wasn’t subtle.’
The C-bomb scandal
As if that wasn’t enough, another explosion tore through the group. Multiple cast members confirm that during a heated exchange, Juliette allegedly called Bec a ‘dumb c***’
Accounts vary on the exact wording, but everyone agrees it was ‘nuclear’

Danny, in particular, was shaken up by it all.
The insult fractured whatever fragile truce still existed between the rival camps.
Forced to flee
The retreat became so volatile that one couple was effectively forced to leave early.
Insiders confirm Bec and Danny left before the end of filming.
‘They were done,’ a source says. ‘They were emotionally drained.’
The official line was that it was a mutual decision to leave the experiment, but privately some cast members suspected they were taken out to stop the conflict from escalating.
‘They couldn’t let it die,’ one insider says. ‘It was just getting worse.’
The impact of Steven and Rachel’s relationship
For Steven and Rachel, the damage went deeper than a public argument. ‘They felt like their intimacy had become a punchline,’ an insider says
For Steven and Rachel, the damage ran deep.
‘They felt like their intimacy had become a punchline,’ an insider says.
‘What was meant to be a special moment between them suddenly felt pressured and under a microscope.’
Steven reportedly struggled with the constant spotlight on their sex life.
‘He was sick of it being discussed. It made things awkward. It pushed them backwards,’ a source explains.
‘It absolutely strained their relationship. Especially around intimacy. It didn’t feel organic anymore.’
While they eventually tried to work through it, the retreat marked a turning point for the pair.
