A Pennsylvania community is in shock after two parents were charged with homicide following the d3ath of their one-day-old baby boy inside a hospital maternity ward — a case prosecutors are already describing as one of the most horrifying they have ever encountered.

Kevin Canaan, 28, and Yeniffer Tavarez-Cepeda, 25, are accused of fatally injuring their newborn son while alone with him inside a private recovery room at Tower Health Reading Hospital in West Reading, Pennsylvania.

According to investigators, the infant was born healthy on May 2 before suddenly being discovered in severe medical distress only hours later. Hospital staff reportedly noticed the newborn had become pale, limp, and was struggling to breathe.

Medical personnel quickly transferred the baby to the neonatal intensive care unit before he was airlifted to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for emergency treatment. Tragically, the child d!ed the following day.

Doctors at Penn State Hershey reportedly informed investigators that the infant’s injuries were “consistent with physical abuse” and not related to complications from childbirth.

An autopsy later revealed the newborn suffered what officials described as “multiple traumatic injuries,” with forensic pathologists ruling the d3ath a homicide.

Authorities say repeated wellness checks inside the maternity ward helped investigators narrow down the exact timeframe when the injuries allegedly occurred.

Police claim the baby was under the exclusive supervision of both parents during that period. Investigators also allege the couple noticed the infant was in distress but failed to alert nurses or hospital staff.

The disturbing allegations intensified further after reports suggested hospital staff became concerned not only about the baby’s condition, but also about the father’s allegedly unusual behavior before police were contacted.

On May 19, authorities arrested both parents and charged them with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. They are currently being held without bail at Berks County Prison.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams reportedly described the case as among the worst he has witnessed during his career in law enforcement.

Online reactions have been filled with horror and disbelief as details surrounding the case spread nationwide.

Many social media users expressed heartbreak that a newborn child allegedly suffered fatal injuries inside what should have been one of the safest places imaginable — a hospital maternity ward surrounded by medical staff.

Others questioned whether warning signs may have existed before the baby’s condition suddenly deteriorated.

Meanwhile, investigators continue reviewing medical records, surveillance footage, staff observations, and interviews connected to the case as prosecutors prepare for what could become one of Pennsylvania’s most disturbing child abuse trials in recent years.

For hospital workers involved in the emergency response, the tragedy has reportedly left deep emotional scars.

And for many following the case, one devastating reality remains impossible to process: a newborn baby who had just entered the world never made it home alive.
