Newly Released UK Government Files Reveal What Officials Really Thought About Ex-Prince Andrew’s Role — And It’s Sparking Fresh Debate
6
A new batch of government files has brought Prince Andrew back into the spotlight after revealing how senior officials viewed his role representing Britain overseas — and the details are reigniting debate across the UK.
The documents, released by the British government this week, relate to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment as the UK’s Special Representative for Trade and Investment in the early 2000s. Inside the papers, officials described Andrew as a potentially “valuable asset” in promoting British interests abroad, particularly because of his international profile and access to high-level connections.
Andrew held the trade envoy role from 2001 to 2011, travelling widely on behalf of the UK and meeting business leaders, diplomats and government officials around the world. Supporters at the time believed his royal status gave Britain a unique advantage in opening doors internationally.
But the release of the files has also raised difficult new questions.
Trade Minister Chris Bryant told Parliament there appears to be no record of formal security vetting or due diligence having been carried out before Andrew was appointed to the high-profile role.
That revelation has triggered renewed political criticism, with opponents questioning how such a sensitive position could have been approved without the sort of checks expected today.
The files also add to previous reports suggesting Queen Elizabeth II strongly supported Andrew taking on a major public role promoting British interests overseas. Officials described the late monarch as being “very keen” for him to represent the country internationally.
For royal watchers, the documents offer a rare look behind the scenes at how Andrew’s role was created — and how deeply the Palace may have been involved in shaping it.
The publication comes during a period of renewed scrutiny around Andrew’s past public life, meaning even historical decisions from more than two decades ago are now being reexamined in a very different light.
While opinions remain divided, one thing is clear: these newly released files have reopened a conversation many believed had long been closed.
