Mum breaks silence after her baby is kidnapped during brazen car theft in Queensland
A shaken Townsville mother has broken her silence after her car was stolen with her newborn baby inside, in the latest brazen vehicle theft to rock Queensland.
Sarah, whose surname has been withheld, said she was unloading rubbish from her car in her driveway on Monday afternoon while her two-month-old daughter, Callie, slept inside when thieves struck.
‘It just it happened so quickly and it was the longest two minutes of my life waiting for that car to turn around and drop her off. Because as a mum, you’re obviously expecting the absolute worst and you see what happens to the vehicles here,’ Sarah told Sunrise.
‘Your mind goes to some pretty crazy places.
‘They can take the car, cars are replaceable, but to know that my baby was in that vehicle when they’re so erratic was the most frightening couple of minutes of my life.’
The thieves then drove back towards Sarah’s driveway, put the baby on the kerb in its car seat, before bizarrely handing Sarah her mobile phone and sped off.
‘I just stood in front of them asked them, “Why are you doing this? This is my family car. We work hard for this and I need this,” and they said, “Because we’re bad guys”,’ Sarah said.
‘And I was like, “Okay, well, can I at least have my phone?” and they handed me it.’

Sarah said this isn’t the first time she has been the victim of a robbery.
She is now calling on the Queensland Liberal Government to strengthen laws to ensure criminals are not able to keep reoffending with little consequence.
‘It’s such a common thing. You speak to people here and every second person has had a car stolen or they’ve been broken into, and it’s just such an invasion. And it’s violating. It feels disgusting,’ Sarah said.
‘People are scared to drive around the roads because of these drivers. And it’s not fair. We shouldn’t have to live in fear like that.’
Police located Sarah’s black Isuzu D-Max on Monday night at a carpark on Charters Towers Road, alongside a white Ford Ranger that was stolen from a property on June 14.
However, Sarah said she feels so violated that she does not want her car back.
On Tuesday morning, Queensland Police confirmed eight teenagers and two adults were arrested and charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle offences as part of an investigation into a number of stolen vehicles allegedly driven around Townsville on Monday.
Investigations remain ongoing to confirm the links to the theft of Sarah’s car.
Police confirmed no one was physically injured during the incident.
The baby was assessed by paramedics as a precaution.
