Sadio Mane explains why he chose Liverpool over Man United & 1 other club

As the tide turned in Liverpoolâs favour following Sir Alex Fergusonâs departure from Man United, Sadio Mane was one of the key figures who chose Merseyside over Manchester.
The 2013/14 season saw the north west power shift down the M62 to Merseyside as Brendan Rodgersâ Reds pushed for the title while David Moyes failed in his job taking over the reigning champions.
It wasnât until Jurgen Klopp arrived in late 2015, though, that Liverpool began to truly topple their rivals.
Among the Germanâs most pivotal signings was Mane, who arrived at Anfield for ÂŁ34 million from Southampton in the summer of 2016.
Why Sadio Mane turned down Man United for Liverpool

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the Senegalese winger recalled how Man United also wanted him.
âAt that time, Manchester United called me at the same time,â Mane recounted.
âI was talking to Van Gaal. Rooney was there, Di Maria was there, Depay was there. When they failed to buy me, they bought Martial.
âVan Gaal called me. He said, âMane, how are you? I want you to come to Manchester Unitedâ.
âI say, âReally?â
âHe said, âYeah. OK, now Iâm talking to my agent.
ââWeâll see what is the best because I know you are a good player and you can help the team, and we can help you also to become a better player.â
âAnd then I say, âOK. My question: you have Depay, you have Rooney, you have Van Persie I think, so where am I going to play?â
âThat was my question because me, I want to play.
âHe said, âI know youâre talented, youâre good but if you do good training, good impression, you will play, but we have another player goodâ.
âSo I was not convinced about his [explanation]. A few days after, Klopp called me.â
Interestingly, Klopp himself gave a similar reason for turning down Man United after Fergusonâs exit, recently explaining how the project âwas not about footballâ and to just âbring the best players together then letâs goâ.
Sadio Mane also turned down Tottenham in favour of Liverpool

It was the bossâ personal touch that led to Mane joining Liverpool, with the now 33-year-old explaining that the managerâs apology over a previous failed transfer from Red Bull Salzburg to Borussia Dortmund played a part in choosing the Reds.
âAt the time Liverpool was even not in the Champions League,â Mane said.
âWhen Klopp called me, he said, âHow are you? It was my fault you didnât come to Dortmund because he knew I wanted to comeâ.
âI met him first. I was not happy and he apologised first.
âAnd he said, âWe will build a team no one will want to play against and then if we grow up together, then you play every gameâ.
âSo when he said this, I went to this kind of project that I wanted because he said weâll make a strong team and I will play every game.â

Mane also explained how he turned down Tottenham to come to Liverpool, having already informed Mauricio Pochettino he would move to north London.
âThree days after, Klopp called me,â Mane continued.
âI say, âThis is my club! This is the right [decision] and this is what I want to do!â
âAnd I say, âI give you my word. Some clubs wanted me but no, Iâm coming thereâ.â
