Despite chatting to Queen Camilla last year, actor Sam said how her mental health and communication abilities deteriorated considerably in her final years (pictured in 2012)
In a deeply moving interview, actor Sam West has opened up about the final chapter of his mother Prunella Scales’ extraordinary life — revealing that their last real conversation happened two years before her passing.
The beloved Fawlty Towers actress, who died peacefully at 93, spent her final years bravely battling dementia — a fight that slowly silenced one of Britain’s most distinctive voices, yet never dimmed her warmth or humour. “How Old Am I?” — Her Last Beautifully Timed Joke
Speaking to Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast, Sam recalled their final “proper chat,” which took place on her 90th birthday:
“She asked, ‘How old am I?’ I told her, ‘You’re 91, Mum.’ And she just said, ‘91? F***.’ Beautifully timed, beautifully enunciated. That was Mum — witty, sharp, and perfectly herself, even as the illness took hold.”
It was, Sam said quietly, “probably the last thing that made any sense.”
Prunella Scales’s son Sam West has spoken about her final few years living with dementia and said his last ‘proper conversation’ with his mother was two years ago
👑 A Royal Moment Few Knew About
Despite her deteriorating memory, Prunella still had flashes of recognition and grace. Just last year, she attended a literary event in Rye with Queen Camilla, where — to everyone’s surprise — she appeared to recognise the Queen.
“They kissed, laughed, and chatted,” Brandreth recalled. “If you hadn’t known about her illness, you’d never have guessed.”
💞 Love That Outlived Memory
Prunella’s husband of 61 years, Timothy West, passed away just last November at 90. Sam shared how the loss broke something in his father — and how his mother, heartbreakingly, never knew he was gone.
“She’s not aware that he’s died, which sounds sad, but it’s a mercy,” Sam admitted softly. “She isn’t mourning a 61-year marriage.”
Still, their bond endured in spirit. The couple’s shared love for canal boating became a poignant metaphor for their journey through illness and love.
“Mum once said, ‘I don’t always know where I’m going, but I always enjoy getting there.’ That was her. Even in confusion, she found beauty.”
🕊️ A Quiet Strength Behind the Scenes
Even after her diagnosis in 2013, Prunella continued living at home in London with the help of carers and her devoted family. She attended her grandson’s church choir performance just months ago.
“She was never angry, never bitter,” Sam said. “Quite content, actually. We were lucky to have treatment that slowed things down. The hardest part was watching Dad lose his best friend — her laughter, her spark.”

He added with a bittersweet smile:
“Honestly, I think they went in the wrong order.”
🎭 The Legacy of a Comic Legend
To millions, she was Sybil Fawlty, the razor-tongued yet lovable wife in Fawlty Towers. To her family, she was a woman of immense talent, humour, and vulnerability.
“Mum didn’t always love being herself,” Sam confessed. “Acting gave her freedom — when dementia took that away, it broke her heart.”
Her Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese led tributes, calling her “a wonderful comic actress and a very sweet lady.”
“Scene after scene, she was absolutely perfect,” he wrote. “Two of my best departed comedy friends — Pru and Nicky. She was already a star when I entered show business.”
🌹 A Peaceful Goodbye
Her family confirmed she “passed away peacefully at home,” surrounded by love.
Brandreth revealed that at an event he hosted last year, attended by Queen Camilla, the extent of Prunella’s dementia was not clear to others (pictured at the event)
“Though dementia ended her 70-year career far too soon, her final days were calm, comfortable, and filled with affection.”
Prunella is survived by her two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
She may have forgotten the world — but the world will never forget her. ❤️
🕊️ Rest in peace, Prunella Scales — forever Britain’s comedy queen.
