Les Dennis is one of the most recognisable faces on British television, best known for hosting Family Fortunes, but behind the laughter his personal life has been marked by heartbreak and turmoil — especially during his turbulent second marriage to Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden.

Born in Liverpool, Les built his career from social clubs across the north west before winning an ITV talent show and landing roles on programmes such as Russ Abbot’s Madhouse and The Laughter Show. Yet away from the cameras, his love life was far from smooth.

At just 21, Les married his first wife Lynne Webster in 1974 and the couple welcomed a son, Philip. However, in his autobiography he later revealed that during that marriage he had continued an extramarital affair with Doctor Who actress Sophie Aldred. The couple eventually separated in 1990.

Four years later, Les tied the knot for a second time with Amanda Holden — he was 42, while she was just 24.

Despite their glamorous image, the relationship was deeply troubled. The pair split twice during their decade together, with the first rupture coming in 2000 after Amanda’s affair with actor Neil Morrissey was exposed in the press.

In her autobiography No Holding Back – My Story, Amanda admitted she “hated herself” for the affair, revealing that their once romantic “old-fashioned courting” vanished almost immediately after marriage and was replaced by constant rows.

She detailed how arguments became increasingly volatile, recalling one night in a London restaurant when she said a group of men had to help her leave after Les allegedly lost his temper, kicked her under the table and swore at her while trying to physically stop her walking out.

Although the couple attempted to rebuild their marriage, they eventually separated for good in 2003 — closing a painful chapter that continues to fascinate fans years later.
