Young Sydney woman’s VERY awkward first date disaster leaves hundreds in stitches: ‘I bet no one can top this story’

Sydney woman’s first date horror story has left many Australian women saying the exact same thing.

The tale, which has reignited debate about the state of modern dating, saw Rav Randhawa, 36, find herself trapped in an increasingly awkward situation after agreeing to meet a man she matched with on a dating app.

Sharing the experience with her 3,000 Instagram followers, Rav claimed nobody would be able to top what happened next.

‘Please tell me some of your first date horror stories. I’ll bet my first born that no one can top this story lol,’ she said.

The video quickly struck a chord among fellow women who flooded the comments section with stories of disappointing dates, while others argued Rav’s experience perfectly encapsulated what many see as the growing lack of effort in dating.

Recalling the encounter, she explained that it happened two years ago after she matched with a man on Hinge and agreed to meet him in person.

At first, she was encouraged by what appeared to be a refreshing level of enthusiasm.

Unlike many matches who spend weeks exchanging messages without making plans, Rav said the man organised a date almost immediately and offered to pick her up himself.

‘He had good chat [and] organised a date really quickly and offered to pick me up,’ she recalled.

‘But silly me, didn’t ask the details of the date.’

Believing she had found someone willing to take the initiative, she happily agreed.

‘I was like, this is great, when does this ever happen?’ she said, however, her excitement was short-lived.

The moment she got into the car, Rav quickly realised there was one major problem with the date – her match seemingly had no idea what they were actually doing.

‘He’s basically like, “Oh, should we go get some ice cream?”‘ she recalled.

The suggestion left her confused, particularly given she had assumed some kind of plan had already been made.

Any hope that the evening might improve quickly evaporated when the pair pulled into a McDonald’s drive-through.

By this point, Rav said she was already questioning why she had agreed to meet him in the first place, as her companion continued chatting away about his day while seemingly oblivious to the increasingly awkward situation.

When they reached the ordering speaker, he confidently ordered himself an Oreo McFlurry before turning to Rav and casually asking if she wanted anything.

‘Am I just here to watch you eat a McFlurry?’ she recalled thinking.

Still trying to make sense of the evening, Rav opted for a frozen Coke, which her date purchased for just two dollars before pulling forward to collect their order.

However, things only became stranger once they reached the payment window.

According to Rav, the man appeared to spend several moments fumbling around inside his car searching for loose change before pulling out his phone to open the McDonald’s app so he could collect loyalty points on the purchase.

After collecting their order, she assumed they would continue on to another destination, but instead, her date parked the car in the McDonald’s car park.

‘He’s like, “should we just park in the parking lot?”‘

For Rav, that was the moment the reality of the evening truly sank in.

‘This is a 30-something year old man, and this is his definition of a date.’

After taking one look at his vanilla McFlurry (which, allegedly wasn’t what he’d ordered), and briefly wondering aloud whether he should return it, the man proceeded to devour the dessert at remarkable speed.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone eat a McFlurry so quickly without getting brain freeze,’ she joked.

However, Rav quickly realised her match seemingly had no idea what they were doing. Any hope quickly evaporated when the pair pulled into a nearby McDonald's drive-through where he proceeded to order a McFlurry for himself and frozen coke for her before parking in the carpark to eat

By the time he finished, she said ice cream was smeared across his face and he realised he didn’t have any napkins.

Rather than using tissues or asking for extras from inside the restaurant, Rav claimed the man began rummaging through the back of his car before producing a pair of shorts and using them to wipe the melted ice cream from his mouth.

‘For the people wondering what the dating scene in Sydney is like, that’s it,’ she concluded.

The scenario resonated with countless women online, many of whom said they had found themselves in similar situations after meeting people through dating apps.

For many commenters, the issue wasn’t whether the date involved an expensive dinner or elaborate activity, but rather the apparent lack of thought and preparation that had gone into organising it.

‘Pls tell me you got out of the car and Ubered home,’ one person wrote.

‘Haha the way I was cackling. I’m not surprised the dating scene is the absolute trenches at the moment,’ another added.

‘Nooo, not the shorts that were probably dirty,’ a third joked.

Others argued that stories like Rav’s highlight a broader shift in dating culture, where convenience and spontaneity have increasingly replaced effort and intentionality.

Several commenters suggested that while lots don’t expect lavish gestures or expensive nights out, having a venue, activity or plan demonstrates respect for the other person’s time and ‘signals genuine interest’.
