YNW Melly Secures Major Legal Victory as Witness Tampering Charges Dropped
In a significant development in the prolonged legal battle involving Florida rapper YNW Melly (real name Jamell Demons), Broward County prosecutors have dismissed four serious charges related to witness tampering. The decision was announced on January 20, 2026, during a status hearing—just one day before jury selection was scheduled to begin in the separate trial.
The dropped charges included:
Tampering with a witness in a capital felony case
Directing the activities of a criminal gang
Criminal solicitation to commit murder
Conspiracy to tamper with a witness on a capital felony
These allegations dated back to the period surrounding Melly’s first double murder trial in 2023. Prosecutors had claimed that Melly, while incarcerated, used intermediaries—including other inmates—to pressure a key witness (his then-girlfriend) not to cooperate or testify against him. The case involved monitored jail communications, such as phone calls and note-passing between cells, which investigators interpreted as coordinated efforts to influence testimony. Some elements of the investigation also tied into gang-related monitoring, with references to affiliations like subsets of the United Blood Nation.
Melly’s defense team, including attorneys Drew Findling and Carey Haughwout, celebrated the dismissal. In a statement, they described the charges as baseless, noting that “no crimes had occurred” and criticizing the state for pursuing them for 652 days until the eve of trial. The move effectively eliminates the risk of additional severe penalties under Florida law, where tampering in a capital case can carry punishments equivalent to the underlying offense—potentially life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
This outcome represents a clear win for the defense in this ancillary proceeding. It removes gang-related enhancements and related evidence that could have complicated proceedings or influenced sentencing if pursued successfully. The dismissal may also limit the prosecution’s ability to introduce certain communications or allegations in the main case.
However, Melly’s freedom remains far from assured. He continues to face retrial on the core charges: two counts of first-degree murder in the 2018 deaths of his childhood friends and fellow rappers YNW Sakchaser (Anthony Williams) and YNW Juvy (Christopher Thomas). Prosecutors allege the killings occurred after a late-night recording session in Fort Lauderdale, staged to resemble a drive-by shooting.
Melly’s initial trial in 2023 ended in a mistrial after a hung jury following days of deliberation. The retrial is now scheduled for January 2027, meaning Melly will have spent over eight years in custody at the Broward County Jail without a conviction. Prosecutors maintain their pursuit of the death penalty if he is found guilty in the homicide case.
The witness tampering dismissal highlights potential weaknesses in aspects of the state’s investigative approach, particularly around jail communications and gang classifications. While fans and supporters view this as evidence of broader issues in the case against Melly, the Broward County State Attorney’s Office has confirmed it will proceed fully with the double murder prosecution.
As the legal process drags on, Melly’s supporters continue to advocate for his release, emphasizing the extended pretrial detention and calling for justice. With the retrial still a year away, this chapter closes one front but leaves the most serious accusations unresolved. The coming months will likely see further pretrial motions, including possible renewed efforts for bail or release pending trial.
