An interesting exchange unfolded at the White House this week as President Donald Trump’s Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, was questioned on whether Hillary Clinton will ever face consequences for her role in funding the now-debunked Steele Dossier.
During the press briefing, conservative commentator David J. Harris Jr. directly questioned Leavitt on the lingering concerns among Americans over Clinton and the Democratic National Committee’s financing of the dossier, which served as the foundation for the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane probe into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
“A ton of my audience is still asking questions about Hillary Rodham Clinton and the fact that it came out that her and the DNC funded the Steele Dossier,” Harris said. “We just want to know that it’s not dead in the water — that Hillary’s not just off scot-free after knowing what she and the DNC did.”
Leavitt responded to Harris cautiously, saying, “Great question. Absolutely understand and agree with why you’re asking it… I haven’t discussed it with the President, to be honest with you, but certainly we can ask him and get back to you.”
However, that’s where the exchange quickly ended.
The exchange highlights the continued frustration from Trump’s base over the lack of accountability in the aftermath of what many view as a politically motivated effort to attack his first presidential term. While it has been confirmed through federal disclosures that Clinton’s campaign and the DNC financed the dossier, which was later used to justify FISA surveillance warrants, no legal consequences have followed.
President Trump has frequently called for further investigations and accountability tied to the Russia collusion narrative, which his administration has consistently referred to as a “hoax.”
The President has not yet publicly responded to Leavitt’s remarks or indicated whether any renewed inquiries into Clinton’s past actions are underway.
