Sarah Ferguson would regularly splurge on the most common things, according to a royal author.
Sarah Ferguson’s extravagant spending habits have resurfaced in the spotlight as the former Duchess of York is left without a home or title following the latest revelations about her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s, links to Jeffrey Epstein. Fergie, as she is affectionately known, would regularly be praised for her down-to-earth and approachable nature, but according to claims in a new book, her lavish lifestyle in private was anything but relatable.
According to Andrew Lownie, who released a new biography called Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, Ms Ferguson would stack up expenses of up to millions and spend thousands on even the little things, such as coat hangers and watercress. The author claimed that Fergie would “regularly miss flights that were not refundable,” while he cited a source claiming that she would arrive at the airport with “25 cases and paying between £800 and £4,000 in excess baggage”.
The source claimed that at least five of Fergie’s suitcases were packed with toiletries and make-up, while another one would be used “solely for clothes hangers”.

Fergie has wild spending habits according to an author. (Image: Getty)Her alleged extravagant spending included “personal trainers, hairdressers and Pilates instructors who were paid hundreds of pounds an hour to wait for her to emerge for the day in the late afternoon. Her butler had to get in at 4.30am to put watercress on ice”.
The author also claimed the former duchess would waste £65,000 a year just to have a personal trainer on standby and only use their services twice.
She would also allegedly splurge £51,000 while shopping at Selfridges for clothes and party items.
A source said: “Someone was dispatched every three or four days to pick up tights, face creams and expensive hair products”. Sarah also once spent £14,000 in a month at a London wine merchant, according to the book.
Her dealings with real estate were not described in a favourable light by the author either.
Meanwhile, a former royal staffer told the author that “greed and wastefulness that contributed to the [former] duchess’s financial downfall”.
They said: “Every night she demands a whole side of beef, a leg of lamb and a chicken, which are laid out on the dining room table like a medieval banquet. It’s a feast that would make Henry VIII proud.”
On top of this, Fergie was dealt another blow this summer when she sold her lavish Belgavia townhouse in London for £400,000, which was below the price she paid, £4.2 million, in 2022.
Her spokesperson told the Mail that Fergie “wasn’t looking to sell it,” but this year she “was asked by the tenant to buy it, and it seemed like a good time to sell.”
