Princess Anne hailed the stabilising effect boarding schools have during a royal engagement on Wednesday.
The Princess Royal boarded at Benenden School in Kent for five years when she was a teenager.
She told naval families at an engagement with the Naval Children’s Charity (NCC) that she felt it made children’s lives easier.
Princess Anne said: “One of the charities I’m doing puts children into boarding schools, and the thing they always say is that it gives them stability.”

The royal added: “I think that’s true for a lot of people, that level of stability, because otherwise it leaves gaps in your life which are difficult to manage.”
However, Meghan Markle believes that the concepts of boarding schools are “barbaric” according to an insider.
Last week it was reported that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in negotiations over Archie and Lilibet’s schooling.
The Duke of Sussex was said to want his children to be educated in the UK, while Meghan Markle is thought to be against sending the young royals to boarding school.

One insider claimed that the Duchess of Sussex feels sending their children to boarding schools would be “barbaric”.
King Charles is said to support the idea of Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet being educated in the UK.
A source told the Mail: “There is still some negotiation for Harry to have with Meghan. The King, however, is delighted.”
However, this week, Prince Harry released a statement denying a claim that he reached out to his former school in a bid to secure Prince Archie a place at Eton.

The Duke of Sussex stated that he has no plans for his son to attend the prestigious school in the UK.
A spokesperson for the royal said: “Prince Harry has not put his son’s name down for Eton, nor does he have any plans to do so.”
Prince Harry praised the UK’s education system during a conversation with singer Joss Stone at the WellChild Awards this month.
Stone said: “He’s just very warm and down to earth, as always. Maybe Harry will move back too. That would be nice. He was saying how wonderful the schools are here and how important community is for children.”
