After watching King Charles lead the nation in a two-minute silence to honour those who have died in conflict during Sunday’s emotional Remembrance Day service, the monarch’s wife, Queen Camilla, and Princess Kate Middleton struggled to keep their true feelings hidden. The pair watched the proceedings together from the balcony of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, overlooking the Cenotaph.

They observed wreaths being laid by the King, his eldest son Prince William, and other members of the royal family, alongside senior politicians, and high commissioners from the Commonwealth of Nations. While watching the wreath-laying ceremony, the duo appeared to share a private joke. Kate’s four-word question to Camilla, which has been revealed by a lip reader, prompted the Queen to hide her facial expression with a copy of the order of service given to attendees.

According to lip-reader Jeremy Freeman, the Princess of Wales, with a grin on her face, turned to the Queen and asked: “Did you see it?”

In response, the Queen looked at Kate with a wry smile, before quickly concealing her lips from view, as she gave a brief reply to the Princess.

It is unclear exactly what the pair had seen as the wreath-laying ceremony continued below the balcony, but Kate continued to share a laugh with Camilla in the aftermath.

The Royal duo eventually composed themselves following the light-hearted exchange, and resumed watching the rest of the service.

Kate and Camilla, both dressed in all-black outfits with poppies attached, were also joined on the balconies by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh could be seen wiping tears from her eyes as she watched the poignant ceremony.

Sophie looked emotional as she stood next to the recently widowed Duke of Kent to proudly witness her husband Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh laying his wreath next to the memorial.

Princess Anne was noticeably absent from the proceedings and didn’t appear alongside her brothers, King Charles and Prince Edward, as she is currently touring Australia and Singapore with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

The Princess Royal instead marked the occasion by attending a Remembrance Service in Sydney, where she laid a wreath at the Anzac Memorial.
