Widespread flooding is expected in the driest regions of Australia as they brace for four years’ worth of rain in one week.

Four years’ worth of rain could soak parts of Central Australia this week, typically the driest part of the country.
A widespread flooding risk for the region has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, thanks to a low pressure trough.
“This low-pressure area is expected to linger until at least the end of the week, bringing multiple days of heavy rain to the interior,” BOM senior meteorologist Angus Hines said.
The low pressure trough may extend over to southeastern Australia resulting in showers and storms over parts of Victoria, NSW and the ACT on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Already, heavy rain has fallen in some parts, causing road and rail track closures.
For the 24 hours from 9am Tuesday some of the heaviest falls in the Northern Territory were recorded at the Granites (79mm) and at Jervois (78mm).
Southwestern Queensland reported 69mm at Bedourie and 52mm at Noocatunga with 120mm at Winithe and 51mm at Smithville in northwestern NSW.
South Australia recorded lower numbers with the 36mm at Moomba.
These regions are expected to receive a further 100-200mm of rainfall during this week.
The Simpson, Strzelecki, Sturt Stony and Tirari deserts, which normally receive 100mm of rain in an entire year, are expecting to be smashed by about 400mm.
“As a lower pressure area lingers over the next several days, a daily total of 50-100mm is possible, with higher amounts where thunderstorms develop,” Mr Hines said.

The slow-moving low pressure system draws in large amounts of tropical moist and warm air, is expected to station above Central Australia, a region with extreme daily temperatures and warm air.
Once the saturated air is high enough and the tropical low has intensified, it is expected to dump all of its water.
Central Australia has a flat landscape and few rivers and creeks to funnel flood waters and act as a natural storage.
As a result, heavy rain could flood, cutting off roads and railway lines while taking weeks for the water to drain.

The East West rail line, a route that connects Perth with Adelaide and the eastern states, has been closed by the Australian Rail Track Corporation following floodwaters washing away sections of the track.
Additionally, another low pressure trough could drag moisture towards South Australia from Friday into the weekend.
