Katie Boulter, la número 1 del tenis británico, ha desvelado en una entrevista con The Guardian los efectos de haberse convertido en una de las deportistas más conocidas en su país. La tenista, de 28 años, se ha visto perseguida por aficionados e incluso acosada hasta tener que pedir ayudar a la WTA.
”Una vez, en el torneo de Nottingham [un WTA 250 que ganó en 2023 y 2024 ], alguien me envió un mensaje en redes sociales que decía: ‘Estoy afuera. Te voy a hacer daño si sales’. Alerté a la WTA y encontraron al tipo, que estaba allí. Cosas así pasan todo el tiempo. La WTA hace un gran trabajo estando ahí para ti en ese sentido. Siento que estamos lo más protegidas posibles, lo que al menos te tranquiliza un poco”, explica Boulter.
La ganadora del WTA 500 de San Diego este año relató también otro momento en el que se vio perseguida. En esta ocasión, cuando fue a buscar a su novio, Alex de Miñaur, durante el torneo de Queens: “Alguien me siguió en un coche. Fuimos a Sloane Square, salimos, dimos un paseo por las tiendas y el mismo coche me siguió a casa. Estaba con Alex, así que estuve bien, pero sí, no fue la mejor sensación”.
Boulter apunta que esta situación no es sólo propia de las deportistas, sino algo que puede afectar a cualquier mujer o niña. En el tenis, su compatriota Emma Raducanu llegó a solicitar una orden de alejamiento ante un acosador que entró tres veces en su casa. Peor fue lo vivido por Mónica Seles que llegó a ser apuñalada por un aficionado durante su partido de cuartos de final del torneo de Hamburgo.
