Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have some big changes on the horizon.

The Waleses are set to move from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge within Windsor Great Park in the coming weeks.

Amid their relocation, George, Charlotte and Louis are also heading towards phases of transition.

Prince William and Princess Kate navigate parenting

By September 2026, George, 12, will be ready to leave his siblings and head off to secondary school. Meanwhile, as their paths stretch in different directions, the futures of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis become all the more uncertain.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman and Kate Williams recently explored the topic of royal “spares”.

In a deep dive episode of the Daily Mail’s “Queens, Kings and Dastardly Things” podcast, they discussed how this is a daunting time for Prince William and Princess Kate as parents.

“It is said that the Prince and Princess of Wales are very concerned,” Robert Hardman claimed, speaking of the differences between Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and how Prince William and Princess Kate may navigate this.

“Of course, Prince George is the heir, and that’s the way it’s going to be,” Hardman mused. “It’s a hereditary, hierarchical, constitutional monarchy. You can’t change that. But there are ways I think, in which you can try and ensure that you don’t leave the younger ones feeling they are any less loved or any less relevant.”

“They’re just going to have to accept their career path is going to be different,” he continued, speaking of Charlotte and Louis.

The struggle Princess Charlotte may face as the ‘spare’

Princess Charlotte is considered Prince George’s “spare”. Like Prince Harry is to Prince William, Prince Andrew to King Charles and Princess Margaret to Queen Elizabeth II.

Famously, royal “spares” have endured struggles being in the shadow of their sibling. Prince Harry voiced his experiences in his tell-all memoir, fittingly dubbed Spare.

There, Harry notably recounted the story of how his father King Charles allegedly said to Princess Diana, on the day of his birth: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare. My work is done.”

Elsewhere, Robert Lacey, author of the books Majesty and Monarch, previously explained to People: “The younger-sibling syndrome is an enduring problem. The system has not found a way of giving them the recognition that they need.”

It is unsurprising then that Prince William and Princess Kate may feel the pressure when it comes to nurturing their trio fairly.

Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’ futures

In a recent chat, former royal butler Grant Harrold shared his predictions on Charlotte and Louis’ futures.

“I think that’s something that their father and mother will support,” Harrold said, speaking on behalf of Study Dog. “I think the days of the royals having to be royals and do what other royals do will be gone.”

Fortunately, it seems William and Kate will navigate raising their children through this transitional stage with a lot of care.

Elsewhere, Royal biographer Christopher Andersen mused to Harper’s Bazaar about William and Kate’s parenting approach. He explained that the duo “pretty much lavish equal attention on all three, while at the same time nurturing their distinct and different personalities”.
