Prince Harry has warned there can be “no second chance” in a new open letter with the support of Meghan Markle.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined an eclectic mix of public intellectuals, artists, economists and more calling for a ban on AI “superintelligence”.
Harry added a personal address to the open letter, in which he stressed the importance of a responsible approach to the rollout of advanced AI.
“The future of AI should serve humanity, not replace it. I believe the true test of progress will be not how fast we move, but how wisely we steer,” he began.
The Duke concluded with the foreboding warning that: “There is no second chance.”
Meghan was among the other names supporting the open letter which called for a halt on the development of advanced AI without proper oversight.
“We call for a prohibition on the development of superintelligence, not lifted before there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in,” the statement read.
Co-signing with the Sussexes was a diverse mix of personalities including evangelical conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck and Steve Bannon, an influential figure in the early years of President Trump’s Make America Great Again movement.

Also joining the call from the Future of Life Institute was billionaire Richard Branson, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Stephen Fry and a host of British and European lawmakers.
In a preamble to the 30-word warning, the group stated that: “Many leading AI companies have the stated goal of building superintelligence in the coming decade that can significantly outperform all humans on essentially all cognitive tasks.”
“This has raised concerns, ranging from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction,” they said.
Harry and Meghan had previously issued raised alarm over the potential dangers of technology while collecting an award at the Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Gala earlier this month.

After being crowned “Humanitarians of the Year” in New York, the Duke and Duchess took to the stage to warn about the impact of technology on young people.
“Our children, Archie and Lili, are just six and four years old. Luckily, still too young for social media, but we know that day is coming,” the Duchess said.
“Like so many parents, we think constantly about how to embrace technology’s benefits, while safeguarding against its dangers,” she continued.
Prince Harry added: “This is a pivotal moment in our collective mission to protect children and support families in a digital age.”

Royals in the UK have similarly been active on this front, raising the issue of the future for children and families in an increasingly digitised world.
Princess Kate highlighted this problem in her essay titled “The Power of Human Connection in a Distracted World” published through The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.
In her piece, she warned that humanity’s growing reliance on technology was “toxic to health” and outlined the dangers of humans losing connections to each other.
“While new technology has many benefits, we must also acknowledge that it plays a complex and often troubling role in this epidemic of disconnection,” the Princess of Wales said.
