The Princess of Wales recently returned to foreign royal tours after nearly four years. Kate visited Reggio Emilia, Italy, on a mission to find out about the city’s approach to raising young children as part of her ‘life’s work’ with the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

The trip marked her first overseas visit since her cancer diagnosis and treatment. Yet, it also meant time away from her Forest Lodge home, and three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Kate is known for being a very hands-on mum, doing the school run, attending events, and spending quality time with them away from the screen.

But being a mum and a senior royal means juggling a number of duties, and in the past Kate has shared her ‘mum guilt’ when work sometimes gets in the way of her parenting.

A royal expert told the Mirror, this is why Kate’s trip was short and sharp, yet so impactful – something that is becoming a growing trend with royal visits.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “She packed a lot into her two days, and this is increasingly the pattern of royal visits: short, sharp, and busy. Maximum impact in a minimum number of days.

“And that suits any working mum. We all suffer mum guilt, and Catherine is no exception. I think she’ll continue to prioritise her children’s needs for many years to come.”

The Princess shared about her experiences of mum guilt on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast, Happy Mum, Happy Baby. When asked by the host if she had ever experienced it, she responded: “Yes absolutely – and anyone who doesn’t as a mother is actually lying.

“Even this morning, coming to the nursery visit here, George and Charlotte were like ‘Mummy how could you possibly not be dropping us off at school this morning?’

“It’s a constant challenge – you hear it time after time from mums, even mums who aren’t necessarily working and aren’t pulled in the directions of having to juggle work life and family life.”

Ms Bond, however, highlighted that the three young royals “are now old enough” to comprehend the duties and important role that their mother carries.

And fortunately, trips such as Princess Kate recent one to Italy can be organised at a time when she doesn’t have to miss out on things like sports days or other school events.
