Amber Glenn showed an act of kindness towards silver medalist Kaori Sakamoto at the Winter Olympics.
After Sakamoto, 25, competed in the women’s figure skating final on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, cameras swarmed the emotional skater as she learned she came up short of gold to American Alysa Liu.
When Glenn, 26, who had already finished her program in the event, noticed Sakamoto was visibly emotional, she quickly went to comfort the Japanese figure skater and shooed away the cameraman before he could capture more footage of Sakamoto’s tears, as seen in a video a fan shared on TikTok.
After the moment went viral and fans praised Glenn’s sportsmanship, she addressed her thinking in a comment on the video.
“Dude I know it’s their job but they will get all up in your business even when you clearly need space,” Glenn wrote, adding, “It’s wild.”

After Sakamoto won silver, she told reporters, “I was aiming for the gold medal. The frustration of not being able to win it is really hitting me right now. I thought I might be able to finish with a smile, but instead I’m ending it with this sense of frustration. Still, I think feeling this way will be important for the rest of my life.”
Glenn had her own emotional moment on Thursday after she delivered a redemptive program that took her from 13th to a 5th-place finish. After struggling in her short program on Tuesday due to a missed triple loop, Glenn scored an impressive 147.52 in the free skate, which put her in first place for a good portion of the event.
After she finished her skate, Glenn pumped her first with pride before sharing a message to “everyone at home” who supported her.
“Thank you for staying with me, believing in me,” Glenn told the camera. “I love you, and I’m gonna keep saying what I need to say.”
Glenn told reporters, including PEOPLE, that she’s “so proud of the resilience I showed,” admitting, “it hasn’t been easy.”
“I told myself that no matter how the program was going to go, I was going to look up and tell myself, ‘You’re at the Olympics,’ and I did that, and I’m just really proud of that moment,” she added.
Glenn previously won a gold medal earlier in the Games as part of the team event alongside teammates like Liu and Ilia Malinin.
