Police found James’ wallet floating in the sea on Thursday near Somorrostro Beach, directly adjacent to the area where the college student was last seen.
James was last seen at Shoko, a popular club with tourists in Barcelona.
His family said that he was in Spain for spring break.
Local media in Spain has reported that James was seen leaving the club with another person.
Investigators have been using helicopters and maritime patrol in the surrounding area, sparking fears that they believe James has fallen into the sea.
“Jimmy is a kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother. It is completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends,” his family said in a statement.
James’ mother said that police were in possession of his phone, which had been stolen.
A direct family member told The U.S. Sun on Wednesday morning that James’s father, Taras, has landed in Spain to meet with police and help with the search.
His mother joined the family in Barcelona on Wednesday, the relative added.
The family member said that police have found the person who stole James’ phone.
A friend also told The U.S. Sun, “This is super tough on all of us right now. He was there visiting with a bunch of our other friends who are juniors.
“A couple of kids in our friend group were already studying abroad there so the rest of the group visited as their Spring Break.
“The whole thing is so confusing. I just want to see him again.”
James is believed to have been wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants — likely joggers — at the time of his disappearance, according to his mother.
He was also likely wearing a gold chain with a rhinestone cross, she said.
