Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Were Killed in ‘Early Morning Hours’ by Son Nick Who Fled from Their Home, Says DA’s Office

Nick Reiner was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special allegation of using a knife on Tuesday, Dec. 16

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has shared new information on the timeline in the deaths of actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, who were allegedly killed in their Los Angeles home by their son Nick.

L.A. County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced in a press release on Tuesday, Dec. 16 that 32-year-old Nick Reiner is accused of killing his parents in “approximately the early morning hours” of Dec. 14, according to a press release issued by Hochman’s office.

“In approximately the early morning hours of December 14, Reiner is accused of fatally stabbing Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood,” the statement reads. “Nick Reiner fled but was arrested hours later that evening in Exposition Park.”

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Hochman was not able to confirm an exact time of death for Rob or Michele. “I’m sorry we don’t have that kind of specificity yet,” he said. “We’re waiting on the coroner to be able to try and determine as best they can at this point time of death.”

Hochman’s office confirmed on Tuesday that Nick, 32, had been charged with “two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, and a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife,” according to the statement.

“Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” District Attorney Hochman said in the statement. “Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner’s murder, are shocking and tragic. We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken.”

As previously reported by PEOPLE, Nick was not at his parents’ home when authorities discovered their bodies. Hours after his parents were killed, Nick was located by police and arrested near the University of Southern California campus at around 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 14.

Rob and Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14. Authorities responding to a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. discovered their bodies inside the Brentwood residence.
