The Princess of Wales delivered her first public speech in two years
Kate Middleton made a powerful return to public life this week, turning heads in a tailored grey Roland Mouret suit as she arrived at the Salesforce Tower in London for the Shaping Us: Future Workforce Summit on Tuesday 18.
The event was hosted by The Royal Foundation’s Business Taskforce for Early Childhood. It marked her first public speech since announcing her cancer diagnosis last year.
Arriving with her signature poise, the Princess of Wales was all smiles as she was warmly greeted by former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate, who later stepped onstage for a candid discussion about leadership, childhood, and community.
More than 80 business leaders gathered for the summit, which aimed to encourage corporate investment in early years development.

Dressed in a sleek light grey suit paired with a ruffled cream blouse and her trusted Smythson East West Zip Tote, Kate embodied both elegance and professionalism.
During her heartfelt opening remarks, Kate urged business leaders to invest not only in profit, but in people, especially children.
“A loving home ultimately teaches us how to love and how to care,” she said. “But every environment has the potential to shape our hearts. Imagine a world where [workplaces and communities] were built on valuing time and tenderness just as much as productivity and success.”
She described love as “the invisible thread” woven through early childhood.
Kate urged companies to embrace policies that support caregivers of children under five. The Princess stressed that “profitability and having a positive impact… are not incompatible.”

Her message was clear. Building a stronger, more compassionate workforce starts with the earliest foundations of life.
The event was also a deeply personal milestone for the Princess. She stepped back from public duties in March 2024 after revealing she had been diagnosed with cancer following abdominal surgery.
After completing chemotherapy and entering remission in the fall, she has slowly begun resuming engagements. Today’s speech marks a powerful return to the public stage.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Christian [Guy], who has led The Centre and built many of the relationships here today,” Kate said, giving a rare public nod to her time away from the public eye. “Thank you for holding the fort, particularly over the last couple of years.”
Future Workforce Summit
Later on, Kate joined a live audience as Sir Gareth Southgate took the stage for a conversation with research psychologist Professor Marc Brackett.
The summit also spotlighted the innovative work already underway thanks to Kate’s task force, which was launched in March 2023.
IKEA, NatWest, Iceland, and the Co-op are among the companies that have begun introducing initiatives aimed at helping both parents and children thrive.

So far, the task force’s collective efforts have reached over half a million babies and young children. They have an ambitious goal to double that number by 2026.
As always, Kate’s fashion choices also echoed the message of the day. Her light grey suit by Roland Mouret, paired with a romantic Knatchbull ruffle blouse, struck a perfect balance between professional polish and maternal warmth.
Princess Kate’s special tribute to Princess Charlotte
To complement her chic ensemble, Princess Kate made a quiet but thoughtful tribute to her daughter Princess Charlotte.
The Princess of Wales wore her ‘Empress’ earrings by luxury jeweller Mappin & Webb.
The delicate yet sparkling earrings retail for £3,750 and feature 18-carat white gold and round brilliant cut diamonds.
They aren’t just beautiful, they also boast their own special history.
Kate wore the earrings for the first time in 2015 to Charlotte’s christening at St. Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham.

Jewellery designer Trang Do explained to Hello!: “What makes their appearance especially meaningful here is the history they carry: she first wore them to her daughter’s christening in 2015. Bringing them out again for an engagement tied to her early years work adds a subtle, deeply personal tribute, linking her professional advocacy to her role as a mother.
“It’s a thoughtful, symbolic gesture expressed through jewellery that’s both timeless and full of sentiment.”
It’s a busy week ahead for the Princess of Wales. She will next be seen at the Royal Variety Performance on Wednesday night, where she’s expected to dazzle in a black-tie ensemble alongside Prince William.
