Kate Garraway opened up about the loss of her husband Derek Draper but admitted, “I won’t cry”. The Good Morning Britain host is currently taking a break from her presenting duties while supporting her dad Gordon who suffered a heart attack in recent weeks.
In a new interview alongside Anthea Turner and Sarah Haran, the mum of two shared what was inside her handbag to pull out her recent book titled The Strength of Love and shared her late husband’s emotional final plea.
“It came out towards the end of last year,” Kate, 57, explained, “and obviously it’s about caring and love. Love for my husband Derek, for the children and for me.”
She explained it also focused on the “challenges carers face”, before opening up about Derek’s hope for their future.
“And then of course he passed away,” the ITV host mused. “It ends in a really positive way, with him turning to me and saying, ‘still to come we have a great future.’

Kate continued on the 3 Bags on a Boat podcast, “It wasn’t as long as we thought it would be… that future.”
The Smooth Radio presenter also shared people’s response following Derek’s death, with some telling the presenter she must be “relieved he no longer has to suffer”.
Kate explained: “They knew he was struggling. They knew it was a massive struggle for me. I think out of kindness to me they think I must be ‘relieved’ he is out of pain. But of course, we don’t feel that.
“It’s an honour to care. I won’t cry, but it’s an honour to care for somebody.”

Derek, who was a political lobbyist, died at the age of 56 after a lengthy battle with the long-term effects of Covid.
The final year of Draper’s life was documented in an ITV documentary titled ‘Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story’.
Following this, the TV star revealed that the £16,000 monthly cost of her late husband’s care was more than her salary from ITV and caused her to rack up huge debts.
Kate recently suffered fresh heartbreak after her father’s “scary” hospital admission after he collapsed on holiday. He is now recovering and she thanked the NHS for their support.
