Fresh details have emerged regarding the circumstances of Liam Payne’s final minutes before he tragically fell from a third floor balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October last year

A leather bag has been deemed a key piece of evidence in the hope of discovering the cause of death of Liam Payne.

The One Direction star tragically fell to his death from the third floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October last year. He was just 31 at the time of his death – and he left behind his young son, seven-year-old Bear Payne, who he shares with ex-girlfriend Cheryl Tweedy, 41.

The circumstances surrounding Liam’s fatal fall are still unclear – and this week, three out of five people who had been arrested in connection to his death had charges held against them dropped. Now attention is falling on a brown leather bag that was discovered on the balcony of a second floor room that is believed to have belonged to the singer.

Images of the bag and balcony in question have circulated online, while reports have suggested that Liam had another bag slung over his shoulder when he fell. There are hoped that the bag that was discover on the balcony could shed new light on the circumstances surrounding his death.

The MailOnline reported on Friday: “[The bag] was said to contain a selection of pills, a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and a note that read ‘for Liam’. Its discovery on the balcony below his room has now further raised suggestions that the One Direction singer was trying to escape at the time he died.” The Mirror has contacted authorities in Buenos Aires for comment.

The latest development comes after authorities in Argentina previously expressed concern that Liam may not have been of a sound mind when he fell from his balcony. Judge Laura Bruniard previously said: “Payne’s consciousness was altered and there was a balcony in the room. The proper thing to do was to leave him in a safe place and with company until a doctor arrived.

“I maintain that the person named tried to leave from the balcony of the place where he was left because the forensic experts noted that he did not lose his balance. This is how the fall occurred.”

On Wednesday, it was revealed that three of the five people arrested in connection with Liam’s death had seen charges against them dropped. Among those released without charge was Liam’s close friend, businessman Roger Nores.

His lawyer, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, said this week: “We are happy to have reversed the decision by 360 degrees. We have always maintained that Rogelio Nores was not responsible for Liam Payne’s death. He was only his friend and had no duty or legal obligation to ensure his safety,”

The three appeal court judges announced their ruling in a written document published eight days after a hearing at Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Court in Buenos Aires. Mr Cuneo Libarona had argued in the run-up to the hearing as he attempted to overturn lower court judge Laura Bruniard’s December 27 decision to indict five men including Mr Nores: “My client is not a manager, he is not a nurse, he is not a psychologist, nor a psychiatrist, nor is he dedicated to the recovery of addicts. He is a simple friend in Argentina who helps him in his business affairs.”
