Alfa joined Chic in 1977 after being encouraged to audition as a background vocalist. She went onto appear in the band’s debut album which landed one number one with Dance, Dance, Dance, with Everybody Dance also charting. She went onto become one of the lead vocalist after Norma Jean Wright left just a year later.
The band went on to score huge hits such as 1978’s Le Freak, Good Times and My Forbidden Lover (1979). Alfa appeared on a number of TV shows at the height of the band’s fame – including Top of the Pops – and worked on Chic-produced sessions of Diana Ross and Sister Sledge hits.
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who created the band, disolved the original Chic in 1983. Alfa went on to tour internationally with Luther Vandross through the 80s. Chic has since been re-established with new band members and has been touring in recent years.
Alfa worked with a number of artists over the years – including Bryan Adams and Mick Jagger – before going on to earn a second master’s degree in educational leadership and became a high school principal in the 90s. She later resumed her love of music and released Former First Lady of Chic in 2013 and album Music from My Heart in 2017.
She also toured with former Chic members Norma Jean Wright and Luci Martin.
