Captain Tom’s daughter finally apologises to the public, saying “nothing dishonest” happened: “Funny how she got much richer”

Hannah Ingram-Moore issued an apology to the general public, saying “nothing dishonest” happened, but adding she was sorry people “feel misled” following the major controversy

Captain Tom’s daughter has issued a sensational apology to the general public after she was found to have personally benefitted from a charity set up in her late father’s name.

Hannah Ingram-Moore has promised “nothing dishonest” happened after the Charity Commission found she and her husband “repeatedly benefitted” from the “mismanaged” charity. She has said in a public apology that she regrets ever founding the Captain Tom Foundation, which has “completely derailed our lives”.

She and her husband became directors of the Captain Tom Foundation, which was set up in the summer of 2020 following Captain Tom’s now legendary NHS funding drive that saw the 100-year-old former soldier walk laps in his garden. He raised nearly £40 million for the service and was knighted for his efforts, but Ms Ingram-Moore was found to have used his legacy dishonestly.

The Charity Commission concluded in late 2024 that, while managing the foundation, Hannah Ingram-Moore and now former trustee Colin Ingram-Moore engaged in a “pattern of behaviour” that saw them repeatedly personally benefit from their involvement. The commission found the family had refused to donate any of the £1.47 million raised from three Captain Sir Tom books, despite their assurances part of the total would be passed to the charity.

Speaking to the BBC, she apologised for setting up the charity with her father’s name, saying it was her “deepest regret” from the ordeal. She said: “It didn’t need to be set up as a charity, we could have continued that legacy without it, because what it’s done is all but completely derailed our lives. It was set up with my father’s name and that is our deepest regret.”

But she insisted there was “nothing dishonest” about hers and her husband’s actions, saying she was sorry the general public feels “misled”. She told BBC Three Counties Radio: “There is nothing dishonest about what happened. The book said it would support the launch [of the foundation] and it did. There was never a specific amount of money required.

“I’m sorry [the public] feel misled, I genuinely am, but there was never any intent to mislead. If there was any misleading it wasn’t our doing.” Mrs Ingram-Moore also disputed the report, suggesting the commission’s findings were “not true”. She and her husband “gracefully bowed out” after finding it would cost too much to challenge, she added.

She said: “We gracefully bowed out and said we’ll have to accept what they say, even though we know it not to be true and get on with our lives.” The “shameless” former charity boss’ apology comes after sources revealed she plans to release a new book, entitled Grief: Public Face, Private Loss.

The book, set to be self-published this week, is “another attempt to cash in” following the charity fiasco, the source told The Sun. They said: “It appears to be another attempt to cash in. While the book does not use his name, it seems it will feature his death and give tips to the public on how to cope with grief.

“Hannah is totally shameless and still doesn’t think she has done much wrong. While most people would be lying low, instead she is releasing a self-help book. But it is quite telling that she is self-publishing – as no big publisher would go near her.”
