Kaynette Williams, who first met The Voice star in high school, is an award-winning teacher in Kansas who’s now married to cowboy Cody Joe Scheck – but how did Shelton propose?
Before Blake Shelton, 48, was serenading Gwen Stefani, 55, on stage and collaborating with her on hit songs, his love life had quite a few plot twists. He and Stefani made their romance official in 2016 and married in 2021 after meeting as judges on The Voice, but for both, this wasn’t their first time saying “I do”.
Stefani had a high-profile marriage to rocker Gavin Rossdale, while Shelton’s love life includes two previous marriages – most famously, his four-year marriage to country star Miranda Lambert, 41. But before Miranda, there was Kaynette Williams, Shelton’s high school sweetheart and first wife.
According to Life & Style, Shelton, still on his way to stardom, married Williams in 2003, but their love story ended in 2006. So, where did life take Shelton’s first love? Here’s a closer look at Kaynette Williams post-Blake.
They were high school sweethearts

At 15 in Oklahoma, Shelton met Kaynette Williams. Despite both attending the same school, it wasn’t until after Williams graduated that the two met, per The List, and the pair were friends for years before finally dating when Shelton turned 21. According to Country Thang Daily, she later became his road manager.

Instead of a romantic dinner or a grand surprise, Shelton popped the question right after a morning of hunting with pals. According to Hollywood Life, after she said yes, the pair spent the rest of the day celebrating with friends, partying, and even heading back out for more hunting. The couple tied the knot on November 17, 2003, in a private ceremony in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, while Shelton was on a break from touring with Toby Keith.

The couple split in 2006, with Williams accusing Shelton of “inappropriate marital conduct”. “I just really don’t think I was ready to be a husband,” Shelton said, per People. Williams reportedly returned to Oklahoma after her split from Shelton, but when he and Miranda Lambert moved in nearby, she realised Oklahoma wasn’t big enough for the three of them. Per The List, she later moved to Kansas, where she’s now thriving as an award-winning elementary teacher. She earned a teaching degree in 1997 and a master’s in 2018.
She’s happily remarried

The 51-year-old has long since moved on from her country music days and is now happily remarried. After relocating to Kansas, she found love with Cody Joe Scheck, who just so happens to be a world-champion steer roper. In 2013, Cody’s mother, Patricia Scheck, told the National Enquirer that the pair’s love story began after meeting via mutual friends. “They fell for each other instantly and have barely been apart ever since,” she said.
