Angel Reese is one of the WNBA’s most well-known superstars thanks to her breakthrough rookie season with Chicago Sky – but the power forward hasn’t always been so well off

Angel Reese has recounted being “broke” before she made a name for herself in the WNBA.

The 22-year-old power forward is currently enjoying a stint in the 3×3 Unrivaled League as she enjoys her Chicago Sky off-season, teaming up with Kahleah Copper and Chelsea Gray under the Rose BC banner. The youngster was the talk of the WNBA when she was selected by the Sky as the seventh overall pick of the 2024 WNBA draft, given her remarkable levels of success at collegiate level with Maryland and Louisiana State.

And in her maiden season on the courts of the big leagues, Reese etched her name into the All-Rookie Team and was named as a WNBA All-Star courtesy of her emphatic performances. She also snagged the award for being the WNBA’s rebounding leader for the season.

While Reese may be living the high life courtesy of a short but incredibly promising basketball career to date, she hasn’t always been the owner of a healthy bank balance. Taking to social media at the end of December, Reese uploaded a memory from June 2019, in which she used to work at fast food chain Smash Burger.

Captioning the snap, she added: “Humble beginnings. I used to be broke clocking in for work then going to practice. Smash Burger days IYKTYK. Sometimes I literally used to work from 10AM to 10PM.”

With a whirlwind 2024 season with the Sky under her belt, Reese has admitted that she’s far from broke in 2025. The youngster told reporters that they were “way off” when she was asked if her reported net worth of around $2million was correct back in November, given her lucrative WNBA contract and endorsement deals.

Reese has secured brand work with the likes of McDonald’s and Beats by Dre to name a couple, as well as a multi-year contract with Reebok which will reportedly see her get her own signature sneaker in 2026. Elsewhere, Reese has also signed a multi-deal agreement with confectionary brand Reese’s to launch an Angel x Reese’s Pieces Logo Collection.

While Reese also remained tight-lipped on revealing her actual net worth last year, she did also note that she has made enough to help pay her mother’s mortgage off. She explained: “I’m able to spend time with my mom. I can pay my mom’s mortgage. My family, everybody’s taken care of.”

She added: “One thing about me, I have a really good circle around me, and I think that’s really important.”

Founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, the Unrivaled league tipped off earlier this month. A total of 36 players have signed up to the incredibly unique three-on-three competition, including Reese, four-time WNBA All-Star Arike Ogunbowale, two-time Olympic gold medallist Jewell Loyd, two-time WNBA champion Jackie Young, and Most Improved WNBA Player of 2024, Dijonai Carrington, to name a few.

With two games played thus far, Reese is still seeking her first win with Rose BC. The outfit suffered a 79-73 loss to Ogunbowale, Rhyne Howard and Dearica Hamby’s Vinyl side on January 17, before a 79-70 loss to Collier’s Lunar Owls the following day.

Reese and her Rose team-mates are next back in action come Saturday (January 25), when they take on a Mist team made up of the likes of Stewart, Carrington and Courtney Vandersloot.
