Schilling, a respected psychologist and dating coach, became a household name on both the Australian and UK versions of the hit reality series. She first joined MAFS Australia in 2016 during its early seasons and quickly earned a reputation for her warm, insightful, and no-nonsense advice to struggling couples on the famous couch.
Her cancer journey began in December 2023 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer (also known as bowel cancer). She underwent surgery to remove a tumour the size of a lemon and initially received the “all clear,” but the disease returned with small nodules later detected on her lungs.
In a heartbreaking Instagram post just two weeks before her death, on March 12, Schilling revealed that the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain. Doctors told her there was nothing further they could do. She faced the news with characteristic grace, urging fans: “If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out.”
Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed the sad news on her verified Instagram account. “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love,” he wrote, describing her as the “matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV” and his “wee Melsie.” The couple shared a young daughter, Maddie, to whom Mel whispered a final loving message using her remaining strength.

Mel Schilling’s MAFS experts John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla ‘heartbroken’ by colleague’s death – Yahoo Lifestyle Australia
MAFS experts John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla, who worked alongside Schilling on the Channel 9 Australian version since season eight, were left devastated.
John Aiken shared an emotional tribute, writing: “It’s with great sadness and heavy heart that today I lost my dear friend and fellow MAFS expert Mel Schilling. I am heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe… She came into my life 10 years ago and together we rode this juggernaut… It was a privilege and an honour to sit beside her on the MAFS couch and watch her shine.”
He added that MAFS “won’t be the same” without her and praised Mel as an “amazing mother and wife” who never complained throughout her battle.
Alessandra Rampolla, who joined the expert panel in 2021, also paid tribute, saying her “heart is shattered.” She posted a gallery of happy memories with Mel, calling her “chica” and “big sister,” and remembering her radiant spirit.

Channel 9 and the MAFS production team released a statement: “All of us at Nine are deeply saddened by the loss of Mel Schilling. Mel was a wonderful colleague and friend… She was a big part of our family, and she will be greatly missed. Our hearts and deepest sympathies are with her husband Gareth, their daughter Maddie and her entire family.”
Schilling’s warmth, empathy, and sharp relationship advice made her a fan favourite across multiple seasons. She continued contributing to the show even during chemotherapy, demonstrating remarkable resilience and dedication.
Beyond television, Mel was a qualified psychologist with a deep passion for helping people navigate love and relationships. She split her time between Australia and the UK, bringing her expertise to both versions of the global franchise.
Her final public message carried a powerful reminder about health awareness, especially for bowel cancer — one of Australia’s deadliest but most preventable cancers when caught early.
Friends, colleagues, and fans have flooded social media with condolences, remembering Mel as a “truly magical woman,” “radiant, shining light,” and someone who “loved love.”
The MAFS Australia team has confirmed an on-air tribute will honour her memory as the current season continues.
Mel Schilling is survived by her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie.
She will be remembered not only for her sparkling on-screen presence but for the genuine care and wisdom she brought to every couple she guided — and for the courage she showed facing her illness with dignity and hope until the very end.
Rest in peace, Mel. The couch will never be the same.
