The heartbroken father of a six-year-old girl murdered nearly 30 years ago received a bombshell letter after a Netflix documentary about the tragedy aired last month.

John Ramsey was stunned to read the note from a woman claiming her ex-husband is his daughter JonBenét’s killer. However, despite immediately following up on the tip, he is yet to hear back from the mystery sender and still remains in the dark nearly 30 years after the killing.

JonBenét was just six when she was discovered strangled at the family home in Boulder, Colorado on Boxing Day 1996. He and his wife Patsy, who has since died, were prime suspects for 11 years and now John is desperate for the killer – or killers – to be caught and punished so he can attempt to find closure.

Although he has tried calling the woman who sent the letter, after the Netflix show was released recently, no one answered the number. John, now 81, said: “Based on all this publicity, recently I got a letter from a lady saying, ‘My ex-husband’s the killer, and I’ve kept this inside for as long as I can – please, please call me. We reached out to her, but she didn’t answer the phone, so I don’t know. We’ve shared at this point with a private investigator.”

JonBenét was in child beauty pageants across the US, following the footsteps of her mother. The documentary, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey, showed how she was beaten and sexually assaulted in 1996, and how police – and armchair detectives – pointed the finger at her parents.

While John admitted solving the case isn’t “not going to change his life at this point”, he hopes it will give him some closure and help his the lives of his children – JonBenét’s siblings – and his grandchildren.

The retired business owner told Mail Online: “They need to have this cloud removed, clarified, and an answer. That’s why we’re pushing so hard to get an answer.” However, there have been few leads or fresh pieces of information in the decades since the tragedy, particularly since 2007 when John and Patsy were “completely cleared” by authorities in Boulder.

John’s son John Andrew JonBenét, 48, has quit his job in healthcare technology sales in order to give up his time to find the killer or killers of his little half-sister. Speaking earlier this month, he said: “There’s someone out there who knows something that could help catch my sister’s killer. The narrative is that this is an unsolved homicide. We want to keep the pressure on law enforcement and encourage anyone who might have information to come forward.”

With the 28th anniversary of JonBenét’s death approaching, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn has released a statement regarding the case.

“The killing of JonBenet was an unspeakable crime and this tragedy has never left our hearts,” Redfearn said. “We continue to work with DNA experts. This investigation will always be a priority for Boulder Police Department.”
