Jenna Ortega confirms that Wednesday season 2 will bring back one key aspect of her character. Netflix’s Addams Family spinoff show was released back in 2022, becoming a near-instant success. The show saw Ortega in the leading role, in a part that earned her her first Emmy nomination. Wednesday season 2 has been confirmed, with a returning cast that includes Ortega, Emma Myers, Fred Armisen, and Joy Sunday, and new players that include Steve Buscemi, Thandiwe Newton, Haley Joel Osment, and Heather Matarazzo.
In a Harper’s Bazaar interview on her press tour for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ortega mentioned that Wednesday season 2 will include more scenes of her character playing the cello.
In the clip, she referenced that she “pulled a good portion of [her] hair out,” while shooting the most recent cello sequence. The actor also said that she and the Wednesday team are now “moving on to the next one,” suggesting season 2 will include multiple scenes of her character playing the cello. Check out the full quote from Ortega below:
We’re shooting the second season right now, so I think it was maybe two weeks ago I pulled a good portion of my hair out for a cello piece. We shot that one-and-done, and then we’re moving on to the next one, so I am currently playing, never said I was good.
What Else Will Wednesday Bring Back For Season 2?
Its Most Viral Element Is Hard To Replicate
Ortega’s quote confirms that Wednesday season 2 will bring back the cello as a key element to the sophomore season. Wednesday playing the cello was one of the most essential elements of Wednesday season 1, as it created artistic sequences while showing an aspect of the protagonist’s character that was at once artistic and intense. She plays some key tunes in the first season, including versions of “Paint It Black” and “Don’t Stop.” As Ortega alludes to in her quote, the actor herself spent months learning the cello in order to authentically prepare for her Wednesday role.
Ortega, and by extension Wednesday’s, cello playing was a majorly discussed aspect of the first season, so it makes sense for Netflix to want to include it in season 2. Another highly talked-about element of Wednesday season 1 was the dance scene, wherein the titular character does an off-kilter dance at Nevermore’s Rave’N Dance to the tune of “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps. Imitations of this dance ran rampant throughout TikTok, and likely drove up viewership of the series.
As in the case of Wednesday’s popular cello pieces, Netflix might look to replicate the Wednesday dance sequence in season 2. Unlike the cello, however, the exact nature of this dance would be hard to repeat without looking cheap. The musical instrument would conceivably be a hobby the character would continue in future seasons, but the only way to really recreate the dance scene would be by repeating it. This provides very little variation and could risk accusations of the show being TikTok-ified. Hopefully, Netflix can pull from other key elements of Wednesday season 1 without copying too much.
