Teenage boy to stand trial over businessman’s fatal stabbing in Clayfield

The boy is accused of fatally stabbing the Universal Store co-founder at a house party.
Greg Josephson, 58, was allegedly stabbed to death at his home in Brisbane.

A teenager accused of killing a national clothing store co-founder at a house party has been committed to stand trial.

The boy is accused of fatally stabbing Greg Josephson, who established Australian fashion retailer Universal Store, at his home in Brisbane’s south in June 2025.

He is the first juvenile to be charged with murder under Queensland’s controversial “adult crime, adult time” laws, ensuring he will face a life sentence if found guilty.

The boy, who was known to Josephson, was aged 15 at the time of the alleged stabbing.

Police were called to Josephson’s Clayfield house about 8.15pm on June 26, 2025 after the 58-year-old was found dead during a party involving about 30 young people.

A majority of the teenagers at the party were unaware of what had occurred before officers discovered Josephson’s body inside the home, investigators said.

The boy was charged after being found injured on a nearby street and has been in custody since the incident.

He appeared via video link at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday as his matter was committed for trial.

Josephson’s wife Tamra was not present, with defence lawyer Kris Jahnke citing an extensive media presence for her absence.

“This is a sensitive matter,” he told magistrate Anne Thacker.

The prosecutor handed up a list of 104 witness statements for the matter.

Jahnke said the boy consented to being committed for trial .

Asked by Thacker if he would like to enter a plea or say anything in answer to the charge, the boy responded: “No thank you, Your Honour”.

The boy was remanded in custody and formally committed to stand trial at the Supreme Court at a later date.

Josephson founded Universal Store with his brother Michael in 1999.

The national apparel retailer was acquired by a group of private equity investors in 2018 for a reported $100 million and two years later the business went public on the ASX.
