Prince William has spoken aboutĀ Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis and how he and his wife have helped their children understand the situation. In a candid new interview with Brazilian television host Luciano Huck from the DomingĆ£o show, the Prince of Wales shared that he and Kate have chosen to be open and honest with their three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, about the health struggles within the family, including those faced by both their mother and grandfather, King Charles III. The interview took place during William’sĀ five-day visit to Brazil, where he presented the Earthshot Prize, the annual environmental award of the charity he founded which recognises contributions and innovative solutions for protecting the planet.

While in Brazil, the future king also took part in the COP30 climate summit, where he delivered aĀ keynote speechĀ in which he urged world leaders to act decisively to safeguard the planet’s future. He placed a particular focus on the devastating impact of climate change in the UK, highlighting the plight of Pontypridd, a Welsh town devastated by flooding earlier this year.

About the personal challenges of this past year, he told the interviewer: “Every family goes through difficult times and faces challenges together. How you deal with those moments makes all the difference.

“We decided to tell our children everything, both the good news and the bad. We explain to them why certain things happen and why they might feel upset.

“Many questions might come up without answers – I think all parents go through that. There’s no rulebook for being a parent, and we chose to talk about everything.”

He also said that the couple are cautious about technology use in their household and none of the three children currently have mobile phones.

“It is really hard. Our children don’t have phones.

“When George moves onto secondary school, maybe he’ll have one with limited access.

“We talk to him and explain why we don’t think it’s right. With full access, children end up seeing things on the internet that they shouldn’t. But with restricted access, I think it’s good for messaging.”

On the final day of his tour, the prince travelled to BelƩm, where he met with Indigenous leaders and conservationists in the Amazon region.

Speaking at the United for Wildlife Global Summit, the prince condemned the criminal networks responsible for deforestation and environmental destruction.

He announced a new initiative to strengthen partnerships with Indigenous communities and to protect both the people and ecosystems of the Brazilian Amazon.

During his stay in Rio,Ā Prince WilliamĀ also recreated one of his late mother’s most iconic photographs, posing in front of the Christ the Redeemer statue, the same spot where Princess Diana stood during her 1991 visit to Brazil.

The Brazilian TV host also reflected on Princess Diana’s humanitarian legacy, referencing the iconic photograph of her cradling a child with HIV, in SĆ£o Paulo, an image that helped break taboos at the time.

Prince William said: “I carry her social and humanitarian legacy with me every day.”
