Prince William has been open about his desire for a more modern monarchy

rince William has made it increasingly clear that change will happen when he’s king, and that may include moving away from some of the more traditional and flamboyant aspects of royal life he reportedly finds outdated or even “embarrassing”.

In a recent appearance on Eugene Levy’s Apple TV+ travel series The Reluctant Traveler, the Prince of Wales addressed his vision for the monarchy’s future.

“I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda,” William, who is heir to the British throne, said. “Change for good, and I embrace that and I enjoy that change. I don’t fear it.

“That’s the bit that excites me. The idea of being able to bring some change. Not overly radical change, but changes that I think need to happen.”

Prince William ’embarrassed’ by ‘elaborate outfits’

Although William, 43, didn’t detail exactly what those changes might be, royal commentators have begun speculating.

Speaking to The Telegraph, royal commentator Ingrid Seward explained her view.

“I think William finds some of the pomp and circumstance, and particularly some of the more elaborate outfits, slightly embarrassing,” Ingrid claimed. “[He] is likely to be relieved to be able to tone it down.”

Prince William ‘ready’ to become king

In the Channel 5 documentary, William and The King: Like Father, Like Son, royal author Kate Nicholl claimed that aides close to William believe he is fully ready for the throne should the time come sooner than expected.

“I asked an aide if William is ready should his time as king come sooner than expected,” she said. “Their response was immediate. ‘He’s absolutely ready.’”

Katie also highlighted the trust King Charles has reportedly already placed in his son.

Since becoming king, Charles has allowed William to represent the monarchy at high-level international events. These have included a meeting with President Donald Trump and Pope Francis’ funeral.

“William has proven himself to be a very capable international statesman,” Nicholl added. “[Charles] wouldn’t have William handling these important meetings… if [he] didn’t believe he was absolutely capable.”

‘He wants to be more accessible’

Meanwhile, Prince William’s recent comments regarding his vision for a modern monarchy have been defended by another royal commentator.

“This shouldn’t be seen as criticism of King Charles,” royal historian Robert Lacey told PEOPLE. “He is very close to his father and has been his most important supporter.”

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith agreed, saying William’s comments reflect evolution, not rebellion.

“William seems to be signalling that he wants to break out of the conventional mold,” she noted.

Rather than rejecting tradition, William is believed to be shaping a monarchy that’s more accessible and grounded.

“[He’s] been quite vocal about what he wants to do when the time comes,” a palace source said. “[He wants to be] more accessible, more approachable.”

Royal Insider has contacted Kensington Palace for comment.
