Prince William is reportedly planning a significant constitutional shift within the monarchy that could see Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children formally stripped of their HRH titles when he ascends the throne.
The bold move would directly impact Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, who currently reside in California with their parents and have had limited contact with the Royal Family since the Sussexes stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
William ‘Ready to Shut the Door’ on Harry’s Family
According to reports, William is prepared to take action where his father, King Charles III, has so far refrained. While Charles has resisted pressure to remove the Sussexes’ titles, William is said to be determined to “tidy up” royal protocols and reduce the number of active HRH titles — a symbolic and legal designation traditionally reserved for senior working royals.
“William obviously isn’t going to hire Archie and Lilibet,” a friend of the Prince of Wales told the Daily Beast. “This is just trolling on the part of Harry and Meghan.”
Another insider added:
“The Sussexes have been asked politely to stop using the HRH style, to no avail. William is expected to issue new letters patent — a royal decree — that would formally remove the HRH status from Harry, Meghan, and their children when he becomes king.”
A Legal & Symbolic Move
The HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) style is granted — and can be revoked — through letters patent, which are binding royal decrees. Historical precedent exists: Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson lost their HRH styles following their divorces, not simply because of their marital status but due to revised rules issued under Queen Elizabeth II.
“There’s a legal and constitutional difference between stepping away from duties and retaining titles,” one palace source explained. “William wants to clarify that distinction when his time comes.”
Archie and Lilibet Caught in the Middle
Although it was originally thought that Harry and Meghan had declined to use the titles of Prince and Princess for their children, the couple began using them publicly in 2022 when they announced Lilibet’s christening. At the time, they referred to her formally as Princess Lilibet Diana of Sussex.
Harry has reportedly made efforts to retain HRH status for his children, suggesting it could leave the door open for them to return to royal life in the future if they choose.
However, one royal insider dismissed this notion as “beyond parody”, asserting that Prince William has no intention of integrating Archie and Lilibet into the working royal fold.
Modernising the Monarchy
If implemented, the move would be framed as part of a broader effort by William to streamline the monarchy, reducing the number of royals holding formal titles and public funding. It would also reinforce a longstanding palace preference for clearly defined roles — and a limited number of public-facing royals.
“It’s not about revenge,” one source clarified. “It’s about clarity and sustainability for the institution.”
As William continues to prepare for his future as monarch, his reported stance signals a sharp contrast in approach from his father — one that could define the next generation of royal leadership.
