“‘HE HAD A G-UN PRESSED TO HIS HEAD… THEN YEARS OF MARINE TRAINING TOOK OVER.’”

A U.S. Marine veteran found himself fighting for his life when four masked teens allegedly attempted a daylight carjacking—only to discover they had picked the wrong target.

Jheyco Borda was working on his truck in Oxon Hill — about 10 miles outside Washington, DC — when four hooded teens approached him around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday

What began as a routine afternoon working on a pickup truck quickly turned into a terrifying life-or-death struggle on a quiet Maryland street.

For Jheyco Borda, a former United States Marine, the encounter lasted only seconds.

But those seconds may have saved his life.

The dramatic confrontation unfolded around 4:45 p.m. in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., while Borda was performing maintenance on his truck outside his home.

According to surveillance footage later shared online, four hooded teenagers suddenly approached and surrounded him.

What happened next was captured on camera.

“Give me your keys.”

The teens surrounded Borda at the bed of his truck while one suspect — who was wearing a red, white and blue sweatshirt — pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the veteran's head, demanding his car keys and phone.

Borda says one of the suspects stepped forward and pointed a handgun directly at his head.

The teen allegedly demanded his truck keys and cell phone while standing only inches away.

For most people, the encounter might have ended there.

But Borda’s instincts kicked in.

Drawing on years of military training, he recognized what he later described as a split-second opportunity.

Instead of complying, he knocked the gun away and lunged toward the armed suspect.

The shocking move immediately changed everything.

The plan falls apart

As Borda grappled with the gunman, the group’s confidence appeared to collapse.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows two of the suspects fleeing almost immediately.

Another remained nearby but appeared unsure how to respond.

The coordinated ambush suddenly turned into chaos.

Meanwhile, Borda continued fighting to keep control of the weapon.

Family rushes to help

Hearing the struggle outside, Borda’s brother Peter ran from the house to assist.

Moments later, their father joined the fight as well.

Together, the family worked to restrain the remaining suspects while attempting to secure the firearm.

Then came another terrifying moment.

A shot rings out

During the struggle, the gun discharged.

The bullet tore through the bed of Borda’s pickup truck.

Miraculously, nobody was struck.

Borda later said the blast temporarily affected his hearing, but he escaped without serious injury.

The outcome could have been far worse.

His children, brother, and beloved dog frequently ride in the truck.

Had they been nearby when the shot was fired, the consequences could have been devastating.

“Once a Marine, always a Marine”

Speaking afterward, Borda credited his survival to lessons learned during his military service.

He explained that the training became instinctive in the moment.

Without time to think, his body simply reacted.

His actions have since drawn widespread praise online, with many calling his response courageous and remarkably composed under extreme pressure.

The aftermath

Although the veteran survived, the incident left lasting consequences.

The bullet damage to his truck is expected to cost thousands of dollars to repair.

According to reports, his insurance company has declined coverage because the damage resulted from gunfire.

Meanwhile, law enforcement has identified all four juvenile suspects.

Authorities say two remain in juvenile detention while prosecutors determine what charges may be filed.

For Borda, however, the biggest victory is much simpler.

His family is safe.

His children are alive.

And a situation that could have ended in tragedy instead became a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change—and how a single split-second decision can mean the difference between life and death.
