The transgender actress, Karla Sofia Gascón has sparked outrage worldwide.
Netflix has distanced itself from Oscar-nominated “actress” Karla Sofía Gascón following a firestorm of backlash over her past Islamophobic and racist tweets.
The streaming giant has removed from her film Emilia Pérez’s official Oscar campaign, leaving her name and image conspicuously absent from promotional materials, including the For Your Consideration advertisements and the film’s campaign webpage.
The uproar began when social media users unearthed a series of Gascón’s old tweets, some dating back to 2016, in which the Spanish actor made inflammatory remarks about Islam and Muslims.
In one post, she described Islam as “an infection” and “a deeply disgusting type of humanity.” Another tweet resurfaced in which Gascón referred to George Floyd as a “drug addict and a scammer.”
The backlash was swift and severe, with many calling for accountability from both Gascón and Netflix. The controversy has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a historic moment for Gascón, who recently became the first openly transgender performer nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
Less than two weeks ago, the film was thriving with 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, and Best Actress for Gascón. The nominations made Emilia Pérez the most-nominated film of the year and just one short of the all-time record.
However, in light of the controversy, Netflix has reportedly ceased all direct communication with Gascón. The streaming giant has also stopped covering her travel expenses and styling costs for awards season events.
A new For Your Consideration ad released on Monday celebrated the film’s 13 Oscar nominations but notably excluded Gascón’s name and image. Instead, the campaign spotlighted her co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz.
Similarly, the film’s official Oscar campaign webpage has been scrubbed of any visuals of Gascón, signaling Netflix’s intent to salvage the film’s awards prospects without allowing the controversy to overshadow its achievements.
The fallout has extended beyond Netflix. Gascón’s PR agency, The Lede Company, has also severed ties with her, leaving her representation solely in the hands of her agent at United Talent Agency (UTA).
Gascón was originally scheduled to attend a series of high-profile industry events in Los Angeles, including the AFI Awards luncheon, Critics Choice Awards, and Producers Guild of America Awards. However, sources have confirmed that she is no longer expected to appear at any of these events.
In response to the backlash, Gascón has issued multiple apologies. In an interview with CNN en Español, she expressed regret for her past remarks, calling them “ignorant and hurtful.” She also took to Instagram to address the controversy, decrying what she referred to as “cancel culture” while reiterating her remorse.
Despite her apologies, the damage appears to be done. Many critics and fans remain unconvinced, arguing that her statements were too egregious to overlook.
